‘Save Mass Effect’ Petition Soars Past a Major Milestone as Commander Shepard Rallies Fans
For many players, ‘Mass Effect’ is more than a video game series. BioWare’s sci-fi RPG franchise became beloved for its expansive universe, memorable characters, and player-driven storytelling, with fans guiding Commander Shepard through the original trilogy before the series moved on to ‘Mass Effect: Andromeda’ and its protagonist, Ryder.
That legacy was thrown into uncertainty last week when EA announced the closure of BioWare and the cancellation of ‘Mass Effect 5’. The news sent shockwaves through the gaming community, leaving fans wondering whether the franchise had any future at all.
Fans have responded in a big way. As Culture Crave reported, a petition to ‘Save Mass Effect’ has crossed 200,000 signatures, and Mark Meer, the voice of male Commander Shepard, has encouraged fans to hold the line.
The #SaveMassEffect campaign launched on Change.org on October 21, started by a single fan, Joe Smith. It quickly blew past its original goal of 30,000 signatures, reaching more than 52,000 by October 23 and topping 100,000 the following day. By October 25, it was nearing 180,000 before breaking the 200,000 mark. The latest count stands at more than 207,000 signatures, all in less than a week.

Notably, the petition does not call on EA to reopen BioWare. Instead, it urges the publisher to commit to the continued development of ‘Mass Effect’ with proper funding, adequate staffing, and enough time to maintain the franchise’s high standards.
It also offers an alternative path. If EA is unwilling to make another game itself, the petition suggests the publisher could license the franchise to another studio that shares the passion to keep it alive.
A BioWare dev on reddit leaked a Mass Effect 5 trailer… it’s called MASS EFFECT UNIVERSE and it’s fucking gorgeous. I’m crying. This is everything I wanted. They were a lot farther than we thought. FUCK EA https://t.co/7rXqCrAiSQ

The campaign has gained support from the actors behind both versions of Commander Shepard. Jennifer Hale, who voices the female Shepard, shared a video imagining a future where fans, a studio and investors could work together to bring the series back, including through a fan-organized Kickstarter.
Meer followed with a video of his own, reacting to Hale’s idea and urging fans to sign the petition while invoking the franchise’s familiar rallying cry. He also highlighted the impact the closure has had on Edmonton, Canada, where BioWare was based, as well as on the wider industry.

Their involvement has given the movement a major boost. For fans who spent years guiding Shepard through galactic crises, hearing those familiar voices back the cause has struck an emotional chord. There may still be a future for ‘Mass Effect’ outside of games. Reports suggest that Amazon’s ‘Mass Effect’ TV series is still moving forward despite BioWare’s closure.
That project could keep the universe alive on screen, even as the future of the games remains unclear. For now, however, fans are focused on convincing EA not to let the interactive side of the franchise disappear.
So far, there is no indication that the campaign could change EA’s decision regarding BioWare or ‘Mass Effect 5’. Still, more than 200,000 signatures in under a week send a clear message about how much affection remains for the series.
Support has also spread beyond the ‘Mass Effect’ community, turning the petition into one of the most visible fan movements in recent gaming history. Whether that pressure leads to a sequel, a licensing deal, or something else entirely remains to be seen.
Do you think EA should save Mass Effect after the cancellation of Mass Effect 5?
