‘Skeleton Crew’ Showrunners Tease Jod’s Redemption Arc and Season 2 Plans—What’s Next After That Finale?
Star Wars’ most recent installment is behind us as ‘Skeleton Crew’ finally wrapped up its run. In the finale, “The Real Good Guys,” the kids successfully alert Kh’ymm, who sends the New Republic to defend At Attin from a pirate invasion.
Jod Na Nawood, realizing his defeat, surrenders by discarding his weapon, though his expression hints at a possible escape plan. While Jod refrains from harming the kids, his actions stop short of the full redemption arc some fans anticipated.
That redemption arc may be in the future as Ford and Watts explained to Screen Rant. Ford explained that Jod Na Nawood genuinely cared for the kids but ultimately pushed them away, reflecting his pattern of distancing himself from people, like Kh’ymm or Pokkit, even when he values them.
This inability to form lasting connections defines his character. Jon Watts added that withholding Jod’s full redemption surprised viewers, keeping them uncertain about what might happen next, which added to the story’s unpredictability.
We played it up because I think that he truly did come to like [the kids], but then he pushes them away. And I think that you see that throughout the people he knows like Kh’ymm or Pokkit, these are people that he had a moment with too and then pushed them away and betrayed them somehow. It again speaks to his character. He has this problem; he can’t get too close to people even if he actually likes them.
Jon Watts noted that not giving Jod a full redemption arc was an intentional choice that surprised viewers, leaving them unsure of what would happen next and adding an element of unpredictability to the story.
It was great, though, because when we didn’t do it – when we didn’t have that redemption flip – it really seemed to surprise people and catch them off guard. Then they weren’t sure what was going to happen next.
Despite poor Nielsen estimates, Jon Watts and Christopher Ford remain optimistic about a potential second season of ‘Skeleton Crew.’ Watts revealed that they have plans for the characters’ growth and their integration into the broader Star Wars galaxy.
He highlighted the dynamic storytelling opportunities presented by At Attin, a once-isolated planet now navigating its place in the larger universe, alongside the kids’ personal journeys.
We’ve sort of tracked out how we would want [the characters] to develop and grow up and where they would intersect in the larger galaxy, We definitely have ideas in mind. It’s such a dynamic moment in the Star Wars timeline, and with At Attin having been this completely secluded planet that’s now suddenly thrust into it, it’s not just the kids growing up and fitting into it. It’s like this whole new society suddenly having to get up to speed with what’s actually going on in the world. There are so many fascinating possibilities there.
