Solo Leveling: The Penalty Zone Explained – Here’s How Sung Jinwoo Ended Up in the Desert!
Solo Leveling is a South Korean novel series that has recently seen an anime adaptation. Arguably the most popular manhwa in the world, Solo Leveling is sure to attract a lot of attention, especially in light of the fact that the anime adaptation is truly great. While we’re enjoying the episodes, we have decided to cover some aspects that appear in the series, and the one we are going to be covering in this article is the Penalty Zone, which is an exceptionally important location and is very closely connected to Sung Jinwoo’s story. This article will explain what it is and how it is related to Sung Jinwoo, the protagonist of Solo Leveling.
The Penalty Zone is related to the System and Sung Jinwoo’s growth as a character
The story of how Sung Jinwoo came into contact with the Penalty Zone started in the Cartenon Temple, where Sung Jinwoo took center stage when the Architect activated the statue, and this encounter helped shape him into the formidable character he would become later in the series. He was able to endure it, and upon deciding to give his life in order to save the others, he demonstrated his faith, was saved, and simultaneously became a Player of the System.
When he awoke in the hospital, the System had gotten in touch with him and given him a list of things to do. The tasks included physical exercise (push-ups, sit-ups, etc.), as well as running 10 km per day. But, as Sung Jinwoo was in the hospital and had no clear perception of what had happened in the Temple, he brushed it off, despite the fact that the System warned him that not fulfilling these tasks would result in penalties. He thought that since he was in the hospital, he could take it easy, but when the day passed, the penalty activated itself, and Sung Jinwoo was taken from his hospital bedroom to a large desert. And that desert is the Penalty Zone!
Sung Jinwoo thought that he was dreaming initially, but a message soon appeared, and he was informed that he had to survive, i.e., avoid being killed, for four hours. Easy enough, but he was immediately attacked by a giant centipede that was bent on eating him, so he had to start running, which was difficult in the desert. He managed to do it, although in the nick of time, and he then realized that the System wasn’t fooling around.
The Penalty Zone is a very complex place, much more complex than a regular Dungeon. The series hasn’t given us too many details about the Penalty Zone, so we don’t know if it always appears as a giant desert and whether the player always has to survive there, but we assume that there are more types of Penalty Zones and more types of quests there; it is a shame that the author did not reveal more, but the Penalty Zone was never that important for the series, so we can understand why the series never focused on it that much. But we knew enough to form a proper article, and we’ve presented everything you need to know here.
So, what happened after? Sun Jinwoo returned to his room, exhausted, and started taking the System’s tasks seriously. He worked out on a daily basis and increased his stats as a Player (Hunter), which ultimately resulted in the System giving him a more challenging quest. But also a more rewarding one. Once he accepted, he was brought to the Instant Dungeon to further hone his skills and powers after putting in several days of intense training. He was afraid to confront it alone at first, but he quickly learned that he could handle it by taking a tactical approach to the threats and monsters, gradually raising his level of skill with every one of them vanquished.
And with this, the story of the Penalty Zone and its importance for the story is over. Have something to add? Let us know in the comments below!
