Welcome to the Ending Explained for Star Wars: Visions Season 2, Episode 3, titled “In the Stars.” Star Wars Visions is a collection of short films by some of the best animation studios in the world. The shorts come in a variety of styles, and Disney has chosen to release this new anthology of shorts on May 4th as a way to celebrate Stars Wars Day. “In the Stars” is a beautiful, dark short film made to look almost like classic stop-motion animation. The short is written and directed by Gabriel Osorio.
The episode begins by introducing us to one of our main characters, a small girl named Tichina. Tichina lives with her older sister on a planet that seems to have been ravaged by the Empire. The entire landscape is filled with ruins, and smoke, ashes, and waste pollute the environment. Tichina’s older sister struggles to keep her younger sister alive, not only because their world is trying to kill them but also because Tichina is quite adamant that they need to fight the Empire.
Tichina reveals that her mother was a very powerful force user. She tells us that their mother told them they could also use the Force, but they have never managed to do it. Tichina’s older sister reminds her youngest that their mother died because she decided to fight against the Empire. In their tradition, when someone dies, they transform into a star in the sky, but their mother can’t see them because the sky is so polluted. The sisters seem to be the last members of their tribe.
Tichina’s sister decides to look for more clean water and asks Tichina to stay put. She infiltrates the Empire’s compound and manages to acquire clean water. However, Tichina didn’t listen and followed her into the compound, and now she has been captured. Her sister fights to set her free, and thankfully, they manage to escape because Stormtroopers have the worst aim in the galaxy. However, Tichina goes back because she really needs to fight the Empire. The sisters end up being cornered by an Empire officer and an AT-ST.
When Tichina seems to be falling, her sister finally uses force and saves her. Together they use the Force to destroy the compound with a huge tsunami. The Empire has been defeated, and now a clean sky opens up, revealing a sky full of stars. The sisters can finally see their mother in the stars, along with the rest of their tribe. The episode ends with the land coming to life once more thanks to the starlight and the two sisters realizing that they will never be alone.
