‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ Casts Its Villain, and the Actor Was Once Second Choice to Play Batman in the DCEU
“Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is one of the most highly anticipated upcoming DCU projects, based on the comic series by Tom King. The limited run, which spanned from 2021 to 2022, reimagined Supergirl in a darker and more complex light than usual.
Unlike her cousin Superman, Supergirl was stranded on a fragment of Krypton during its destruction, growing up in a harsh and isolated environment, grappling with deep mental trauma after witnessing the death of everyone she loved.
Supergirl casting was announced several months ago, with House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock set to portray Kara Zor-El, and now the film reportedly has its villain. According to Deadline, Matthias Schoenaerts will play Krem of the Yellow Hill, the primary antagonist from the limited comic series on which the movie is based.
In the series, Krem hails from the Yellow Hills, though much of his backstory remains mysterious. His focus is primarily on his actions and crimes rather than any significant lore tied to his homeland.
At one point, Krem aligns with the Kings of the Citadel, a powerful faction with dark intentions, and gains access to advanced weaponry, including Kryptonite, which he uses against Supergirl. Krem is responsible for the death of Supergirl’s father, serving as a major catalyst for her journey.
Known for portraying rugged, complex characters in films like ‘Rust and Bone’, ‘Far from the Madding Crowd,’ and ‘The Danish Girl,’ Matthias Schoenaerts was once in the running to play Batman in the DCEU, as Zack Snyder revealed on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast years ago.
I was talking to [Schoenaerts] a lot about it. He never got in the suit, but I did do a bunch of mock-ups of him, because Ben was on the fence. And I don’t blame him. Everyone should be on the fence when you’re asked, ‘Do you want to play Batman?’”
Although we never got to see Schoenaerts as The Dark Knight, he’s now landed a role with the potential to be a key figure in the future of the DCU!
