‘The Flash’ Trailer Breakdown: DCEU Is Dead, Long Live DCU

Share:

The first standalone film featuring the fastest man alive has been developing since 2014. Now, nearly a decade later, it’s finally set to hit theaters. Today we finally got the chance to see the first official trailer, and there is really a lot to talk about.

Ever since The Flash was first announced, DC‘s attempts to replicate Marvel’s success in the cinematic universe have fallen on hard times. Zack Snyder’s time at DC is now over, Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam was a disappointment, and James Gunn is now here to take the thing we once knew as the DCEU and turn it into the DCU, a new cinematic universe that will be much better organized. Now, The Flash movie is the first step towards that.

The Flash is directed by Andy Muschietti, who is currently best known for directing the two It movies that were released in 2017 and 2019.

You can watch the official trailer below. Keep reading to see our analysis of it.

‘The Flash’ Trailer Breakdown

Barry Allen returns

Ezra Miller first appeared as Barry Allen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016. He reprised the role in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, Justice League, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. He also appeared in the Arrowverse crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths and the final episode of Peacemaker last year. Now it’s finally time for his solo adventure, with plenty of guest stars. Although Miller is facing some legal consequences for his problematic behavior, it appears that Warner Bros. Discovery is not only okay with releasing this movie but also has Miller lined up for more projects in the future (if he manages to stay out of jail).

This film was originally announced as The Flashpoint, referencing one of the most famous comic book stories of the Scarlet Speedster, but later the title was simply changed to The Flash. This trailer has now shown us the first clues of the story. Barry Allen will use his superpowers to travel to another universe in the Multiverse and will find a universe where his mother is still alive. But that universe will face great danger, and Barry will now try to save an Earth that is not his, but he is emotionally connected to it because of his mother.

Barry meets Barry

As it seems, the main story of this film will take place on a completely different Earth from the one we have seen in previous DCEU projects. And when you go to another universe and another timeline, it’s safe to say that you’ll eventually meet yourself.

Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen has already faced a similar situation in The Flash TV series, which is currently in its final season. Now, Barry, played by Ezra Miller, will meet another Barry, played by Ezra Miller. Unlike the TV series, where Barry Allen from another Earth was not The Flash, both of Ezra Miller’s Barrys are the fastest men in the world and will have to join forces to stop the coming threat.

Batfleck returns

If there’s one thing DC fans will be excited about in this movie, it’s the return of Ben Affleck as the DCEU’s Bruce Wayne/Batman. Affleck first joined the DCEU in 2016 with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. He reprised the role in Justice League and was supposed to star in his own solo film, which ended up not happening. His solo film was later remade into the independent film The Batman starring Robert Pattinson, which was released last year to positive reviews from critics and audiences alike.

Now, Ben Affleck will return, although it’s hard to say what his role will be and how his character will end up, considering that the new DCU will have a new Batman with a new actor. Some previous reports have suggested that Batfleck will make another return in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which will be the final film of the current DCEU. But regardless of this franchise saying goodbye to Affleck’s Caped Crusader, it’s still nice to see him again, and there will always be a bit of grief left because he could have done so much more.

Michael Shannon returns as General Zod

It’s been 10 years since the release of Man of Steel, the movie starring Henry Cavill that was the starting point of the DCEU. Now, a decade later, we know that Cavill will never return as Superman, but we will see his archnemesis again. Played by Michael Shannon, General Zod was the main villain in Man of Steel, and Zod’s performance was praised by fans. From what we see in the trailer, it looks like this is Zod from another universe, and he’s now ready to conquer Earth in the same way his counterpart tried to do in the main DCEU universe. Antje Traue, who played Faora-Ul, Zod’s second-in-command, in Man of Steel is also set to appear in The Flash.

Michael Keaton returns as Batman

Unlike Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which tried to keep some of its most surprising returning stars under wraps before the film premiered, The Flash is going all out with this trailer. It was previously announced that Michael Keaton, who played Batman in Tim Burton’s Batman duology in 1989 and 1992, would return to the role after more than 3 decades. Still, after all the changes in the DCEU, the creation of the DCU, and the cancellation of Batgirl, in which Keaton was also supposed to appear, there was a question about Keaton’s appearance in this film.

Don’t worry, Batman fans. Despite everything going on with the DC’s cinematic universe and all, Michael Keaton will be appearing in this movie. Even after 30 years, he looks great as Batman. And do we even need to say that there is also the legendary Batman theme music by Danny Elfman from Burton’s films and the Batman animated series? However, this movie turns out as a whole the part with Keaton’s Batman will appeal to absolutely every DC fan.

Sasha Calle debuts as Supergirl

Before production began, it was announced that Sasha Calle had joined the film as Superman’s Kryptonian cousin, Supergirl. Recently, James Gunn announced that one of the films in the first chapter of his DCU would be Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Although not specifically confirmed, Calle is expected to continue playing the character in the new DCU, though that universe will introduce a brand new Superman, played by a new actor.

Despite the fact that it’s hard to say how this movie will fit into the now-ending DCEU and the future cinematic universe known as the DCU, this trailer promises a great superhero ride for all fans. Now we’re just wondering how that transition from the DCEU to the DCU will go. Some previous rumors have claimed that there is already talk about a sequel to The Flash, but it is still too early to talk about that. We have to watch this movie first and then wait for the real start of the new DCU.

The Flash is set to be released on June 16, 2023.
