Does Grog Manage To Save Vax And Scanlan From Umbrasyl’s Belly?

The season finale begins in the worst possible way, with a dream sequence. In it, we see an old version of Scanlan reading from a book where all the legends of the Vox Machina are written. He is telling just another story to her grandchildren. An older version of Pike is also there. Their grandchildren ask for another story, and suddenly the dream becomes a nightmare as Vax’s voice tries to wake Scanlan up from the dream and into a nightmare. When Scanlan wakes up, he sees himself and Vax inside the belly of the beast himself, Umbrasyl.

Outside of the black dragon, someone else is having a terrible day. Grog uses his axe to wound the dragon in an attempt to bring him down to the ground. But Grog’s efforts are futile. Umbrasyl is just too strong. The dark creature manages to take Grog off him, and Grog sees himself falling quickly. He tries to think of something that can help him, and he uses his gauntlets in the hope of counting the fall. When the rest of the team catches up to him, they discover Grog’s body, severely wounded but still alive. Pike puts herself to work immediately, trying to help her friend.

Inside the creature, Vax and Scanlan discuss what to do. They really don’t have many resources. However, thanks to Grog, Umbrasyl is wounded on one of his sides, and Vax finally comes in contact with his armor and manages to extract all of its power. In a very cool sequence, we see Vax opening the wound on Umbrasyl’s side and going out of the creature with Scanlan in his arms. Vax is now flying like a true crow. He lands where the rest of the team is located.

Umbrasyl manages to escape inside his lair and comes into contact with his king, Thordak, who asks for the remaining vestiges he needs for the emergence. Umbrasyl heals himself and gets ready for battle. Outside the lair, Vax decides to go first to do some recon, as he is the fastest. Scanlan feels everyone, including his daughter Kaylin, accuses him of being a coward. When Vax fails to return, the team decides to split, with Pike and Grog remaining outside until Pike can fully heal Grog’s wounds.

Does Umbrasyl Manage To Gather The Team’s Vestiges?

Inside the lair, we see that Umbrasyl has managed to ambush Vax using his invisibility ability. The battle is intense but short, and Umbrasyl is about to kill Vax when the rest of the team arrives. The team battles the dragon with all they got, but not even the power of their vestiges is enough to bring the creature down. They all manage to escape for a brief moment when Scanlan suggests that they should just leave. Vax says he now understands the power of the Matron, and that fate is real. Scanlan doesn’t believe it is fate at all.

Umbrasyl finds them again, and the battle continues. The dragon’s acid breath is a real problem, and his rampage is relentless. The team is about to die at the hands of the dragon when Pike and Grog arrive. However, not even these heavyweights are rivals for the creature. Umbrasyl manages to take the bow from Vex, as well as Grog’s gauntlets. Scanlan appears when the dragon is about to give them the final blow. Having used the moment of defeat as a distraction, Scanlan managed to get close to the dragon without being noticed.

Scanlan grabs his own vestige, the sword Umbrasyl took from him, and he uses it to stab the dragon right in the eye. At the same time, Scanlan manages to use the full power of the vestige in the wound, and the result is that the dragon loses half of its head and drops dead. The Vox Machina wins once again, by the skin of their teeth, though. Scanlan tells Vax that he might not believe in faith or the matron, but he believes in Vax, and that is enough for him.

The team returns home to report their victory. The Chroma Conclave is not invincible. With Umbrasyl dead, there are two more dragons to kill, including Thordak. At that moment, Raishan appears in front of the team using the form of Mother Yennen. Raishan says she comes as an ally, as that is the only way to assure their victory over Thordak, who, in her words, has gone insane and plans to use the gold for more than just to quench his greed. The season ends as we take a look at Thordak’s lair, where he is using the gold to hatch several eggs that probably have more dragons inside.
