The Netflix ‘Gears of War’ Movie Is Going Back to the Beginning With a Delta Squad Origin Story
Few video game franchises carry as much emotional weight as ‘Gears of War.’ Since its debut in 2006, the series built its identity not just on cover-based gunfire and chainsaw bayonets, but on soldiers holding each other together while the world crumbled around them. That core has always been Delta Squad, the battle-scarred infantry unit at the center of the franchise’s most iconic moments. Now, after years of waiting, the Netflix live-action adaptation finally has a story to tell, and it is going all the way back to where that bond first formed.
The film is being directed by David Leitch, the filmmaker behind ‘Bullet Train,’ with a script written by Jon Spaihts, who penned the ‘Dune’ films. That pairing alone signals serious ambition. Leitch knows how to stage brutal, kinetic action at scale, and Spaihts has a proven track record adapting dense, mythology-heavy source material for mainstream audiences without losing the soul of the original.
The official logline, reported by Entertainment Weekly, describes the film as “the origin story of Delta Squad, a ragtag crew of soldiers who wage a desperate war for survival against the Locust, a race of subterranean creatures set on destroying humanity.” That framing is a smart one. Rather than attempting a beat-for-beat retelling of the first game, the adaptation appears to be building its story around the formation of the team and humanity’s desperate war against the Locust, giving Netflix plenty of room to introduce the world without overwhelming new viewers.
Matt Booty, Xbox’s chief content officer, spoke to the emotional foundation the adaptation is working from, telling Entertainment Weekly that “the game really is about the bonds between teams. It’s about brotherhood at its core,” and adding that the studio’s internal tagline of “Never Fight Alone” serves as “a pretty good starting point” for a dramatic narrative.
The film could slot into a chapter of the ‘Gears of War’ universe that has never been fully explored on screen, potentially bridging the gap between the catastrophic Emergence Day and the events of the original game. Fans have had glimpses of that earlier period through titles like ‘Gears of War: Judgment,’ and the upcoming game ‘Gears of War: E-Day,’ set 14 years before the first entry, is scheduled to launch on Xbox Series X on October 6. The movie and the new game appear to be pulling in the same narrative direction, both digging into the origins of humanity’s most desperate hour.
The live-action film is also not the only ‘Gears of War’ project Netflix has in development. A separate adult animated series based on the franchise was previously announced, suggesting the streamer is treating the IP as the foundation of a broader screen universe rather than a single standalone bet. That kind of multi-format approach mirrors what has worked for other game adaptations looking to build lasting franchises rather than one-off adaptations.
Despite the newly revealed plot details, Netflix has not yet announced a release date for the film, and casting remains unconfirmed. The question of who will fill out Delta Squad, and more specifically who takes on the role of Marcus Fenix, is already generating fierce debate online. Now that the story direction is clear, whose face do you picture when you imagine this squad suiting up for the first time?
