‘The Penguin’ Producer Confirms New Spinoff Series in the Works Unrelated to ‘Arkham Asylum’

DC fans have a lot to look forward to this week with the debut of The Penguin series. This spinoff from Matt Reeves’ The Batman movie franchise exists in a separate universe, distinct from Gunn’s and Safran’s DCU. The show picks up one week after The Batman, with Falcone dead and The Penguin working to fill the power vacuum with Sofia Falcone’s help.

It’s clear that Reeves plans to expand this Epic Crime Saga further. He recently revealed that The Batman Part II, currently in development, will be set a week after the events of The Penguin.

It looks like the franchise will be expanding with another TV show, as confirmed by producers Matt Reeves and Dylan Clark.

During a recent press event for The Penguin, The Direct spoke with Reeves and Clark. Clark revealed that a new spinoff series from The Batman saga is currently in development. This came after The Direct inquired whether elements related to Arkham Asylum and Sofia Falcone in The Penguin were adapted from the canceled Arkham Asylum spinoff series that HBO scrapped earlier this year.

Reeves responded with a clear “no,” explaining that the Arkham Asylum content in the series was specifically designed to further Sofia’s storyline, with showrunner Lauren LeFranc at the helm.

“No, no. That story came from what Lauren [LeFranc] came up with as the backstory for Sophia Falcone. And really, what was chosen and what was used was solely driven by what would tell Sofia’s story… … The character that you’re meeting was actually formed through the crucible that is this experience in Arkham.”

“That was what dictated what we saw and so, and that was all. That was all what Lauren wanted to do within that space and what she did with it. So it wasn’t like, Oh, gee, do we want to give this part because we’re gonna do this in Arkham, or that, like, obviously we had a bit of Arkham in ‘The Batman’ and, you know, there may be other[s]…”

Clark then confirmed that another spinoff is in development:

“But her ideas and the story elements that relate to [Sofia Falcone], those are all new ideas for her and have nothing to do with the other series that we’re continuing to do.”

The creatives were also asked about the possibility of a legal drama series focusing on Harvey Dent. Although they didn’t give a definite answer, Reeves noted that the journalist’s suggestion aligned with their discussions.
