The Shelby Name Lives On: Charlie Heaton Gets His First Look as Tommy’s Son in the ‘Peaky Blinders’ Sequel

The ‘Peaky Blinders‘ franchise has never really stood still. Since creator Steven Knight first brought Birmingham’s most feared crime family to the screen, the story has grown from a gritty post-war period drama into one of the defining British television exports of its era, cultivating a devoted global fanbase and making a confident leap from the small screen to the cinema.

That cinematic chapter, ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man’, arrived on Netflix earlier this year and brought Cillian Murphy’s long run as Tommy Shelby to its conclusion. With the film now streaming, attention has quickly turned to what the franchise does next, and the answer is a next-generation sequel series that moves the timeline forward and places a fresh crop of talent at the story’s center.

Netflix has now revealed the first official images from the ‘Peaky Blinders’ sequel series, confirming that Charlie Heaton, widely recognized as Jonathan Byers in ‘Stranger Things’, will play Charles Shelby, the younger son of Tommy. Alongside him, Jamie Bell takes on the role of Duke Shelby, Tommy’s older son, a character previously portrayed by Barry Keoghan in ‘The Immortal Man’.

The new series is set in the 1950s, roughly a decade after the end of World War II, with the action rooted once again in Birmingham as the city works to rebuild from the devastation caused during the Blitz. According to the official synopsis published by Netflix, Charles has returned from a violent war, much of it spent behind enemy lines, and is now reaching for something resembling a normal life, having severed all ties with both Duke and the Peaky Blinders gang. The series hangs its central tension on a provocative question: whether anyone born into that blood can truly leave it behind.

Knight, who continues as writer and creator, spoke with enthusiasm about the new direction. In a statement published by Netflix Tudum, Knight described the story as one that would be “rooted in Birmingham” and would chart “a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham blitz,” with the next generation of Shelbys now firmly at the wheel. He also confirmed that further cast announcements are still to come.

Rounding out the ensemble are Jessica Brown Findlay, Lashana Lynch, and Lucy Karczewski, the latter making her television debut with the production. Filming is currently underway at Digbeth Loc. Studios in Birmingham, with the series produced by Kudos and Garrison Drama under the Banijay UK banner. The show will premiere first on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in the United Kingdom, while international audiences will be able to watch it on Netflix, though no release date has been confirmed.

With two six-episode seasons planned, the ‘Peaky Blinders’ sequel is shaping up to be one of the more ambitious franchise extensions in recent British television history. The post-war Birmingham setting promises a markedly different atmosphere from the razor-edged energy of the Twenties that defined the original run. Whether Heaton’s Charles Shelby can carry the weight of a legacy that Murphy spent six seasons building is the kind of question only the screen can answer, but it’s also worth hearing your take on whether he feels like the right choice to inherit the Shelby name.
