Few toy franchises have made a bigger cultural splash on the big screen than ‘The Lego Movie’ and its offshoots, which collectively earned over $1.1 billion at the global box office before their rights settled into the Warner Bros. library. That success has made the property one of Hollywood’s most coveted second-act opportunities, and Universal Pictures has been quietly chasing a greenlit version since acquiring the rights in 2020, cycling through a number of scripts and creative teams without finding the right fit.

What finally changed the equation was a decision to anchor the entire story around a specific star rather than the other way around. Insiders close to the project say the studio took a deliberate swing at attaching an A-list name, specifically developing the project around a character built for that actor, and spent weeks in back and forth before things began to move.

Per a report from Deadline, Keanu Reeves is in negotiations to star in a new live-action/CG hybrid Lego pic, with ‘Toy Story 4’ director Josh Cooley attached to helm. Jill Wilfert and Ryan Christians will produce through The Lego Group, though plot details remain tightly under wraps beyond the confirmed blend of live-action and animated elements.

Time is a very real factor hanging over the entire production. Insiders say if the studio did not have a film close to pre-production within the next six months, the Lego rights could lapse and head back to market, making the Reeves attachment far more than just exciting casting news. It was ultimately Cooley’s personal pitch of his vision that convinced Reeves to give the project his approval after weeks of engagement with the studio.

That Cooley was the deciding factor makes a certain kind of sense given what the two built together before. Reeves and Cooley successfully launched the Duke Caboom character in ‘Toy Story 4’, and Reeves recently reprised the role in ‘Toy Story 5’, released in theaters on June 19, suggesting the partnership remains warm and genuinely productive. ‘Toy Story 4’ crossed the billion-dollar mark globally and earned a Best Picture Oscar nomination, giving both men serious franchise credibility to bring into this new collaboration.

Cooley also directed the first-ever fully CG-animated ‘Transformers’ movie, ‘Transformers One’, which was celebrated by critics and fans alike following its release in 2024, further establishing his ability to handle big-canvas animated storytelling with wide audience appeal. His instinct for character depth wrapped in accessible humor is precisely what a new Lego universe at Universal will need to stand apart.

The original Lego films, along with offshoots including ‘The Lego Batman Movie’ and ‘The Lego Ninjago Movie’, remain in the Warner Bros. library, meaning whatever Reeves and Cooley build here will need to carve out its own distinct identity from scratch. With a rights clock ticking loudly in the background and one of cinema’s most beloved actors now circling the lead, the question fans are left asking is whether this is the creative team that finally makes a second Lego movie era feel truly essential.
