‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ Showrunner Teases Surprise Return of Long Lost Franchise Characters

The ‘Walking Dead‘ universe has never been shy about bringing characters back from the dead, in more ways than one, and ‘Dead City’ is leaning into that tradition as it heads into a pivotal new chapter. The AMC spinoff has spent two seasons building its identity around Negan and Maggie clawing their way through a walker infested, crumbling version of Manhattan that used to be their home. The series is set in Manhattan, with the lead characters now traveling to a place once filled with survivors and now overrun by the dead. With a new season on the horizon, the show is bringing in fresh creative leadership and a handful of surprises that have fans talking all over again.

That fresh energy starts behind the camera. Seth Hoffman, a longtime producer on the flagship series, has stepped in as the new showrunner for this run, taking over from Eli Jorné. Hoffman is no stranger to the franchise, having written some of the original show’s most pivotal episodes, including season four’s ‘Too Far Gone’ and the season six entries that introduced Negan to the world. His first season at the helm premiered for press at the 65th Festival de Television de Monte Carlo this past weekend.

During that press stop, Hoffman sat down with RadioTimes and dropped a tease that quickly spread across social media. He confirmed that the new season will bring back characters viewers have not seen for a long time, specifically through a non canon episode built around an alternate reality where the apocalypse never happened. When pressed on exactly who might show up, Hoffman kept things close to the vest, saying, “I imagine there are probably some super fans who have some ideas about those, but I’m not at liberty to confirm or deny.”

That special episode reportedly explores a world where walkers do not exist, essentially imagining what Manhattan could have looked like if the outbreak had never reshaped it. That kind of premise has rarely been attempted anywhere else in the franchise, which is exactly why it has become one of the most anticipated parts of the new season.

Stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan also met with journalists following the screening, and both signaled this run feels different from anything that came before it. Morgan, who has played Negan since the character first walked out of a trailer more than a decade ago, told Variety that Negan was a great villain and now he just got more layers. Cohan has separately described the alternate reality material as emotional and uplifting, hinting that the format gives the show room to explore a gentler side of its leads.

News of returning faces has already sent fans into speculation mode. Some viewers have pointed to characters like Rick Grimes and Michonne, whose stories continued in ‘The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live,’ as natural candidates given their long history with Negan and Maggie. Others have noted that the franchise has already shown a willingness to bring back deep cuts, pointing to Negan’s late wife Lucille and his surviving wife Annie both making brief appearances earlier in the series.

‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ returns July 26 on AMC, with episodes also streaming on AMC Plus. Until then, fans are left picking apart Hoffman’s now viral comments, trying to guess exactly which old faces might wander back into a Manhattan that never saw the dead rise. Who would you most want walking back into ‘Dead City’ before this alternate reality episode airs?
