This Clip of Grogu Tasting a Lemon Is Doing More for ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Than Any Trailer

Few characters in the Star Wars universe have captured the world’s imagination quite like Grogu, the wide-eyed, pointy-eared infant whose appetite for adventure is matched only by his appetite for everything else. Since his debut in ‘The Mandalorian‘ back in 2019, the small green force of nature affectionately known by fans as Baby Yoda has become one of pop culture’s most irresistible icons, equal parts fearsome Force-wielder and shameless snack thief. With ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ opening in theaters on May 22, the anticipation surrounding the little guy has never been higher.

Promotional footage from the film has already teased Grogu’s appetite in full force, with the character shown munching popcorn at a gladiator show and attempting to Force-pull a snack bowl right out of Sigourney Weaver’s hands. It is, to put it mildly, very on-brand. Across ‘The Mandalorian’ series, Grogu’s culinary adventures ranged from swallowing live frogs whole to devouring the precious eggs of a Frog Lady mid-transport, each moment equal parts horrifying and utterly endearing.

Now, a clip circulating on social media has introduced what may be Grogu’s most relatable food moment yet. In the short video, the little alien is presented with a lemon for the first time, his large dark eyes staring at the unfamiliar yellow fruit with the kind of intense focus usually reserved for Jedi meditation. The reaction that follows is entirely his own, and the internet has predictably lost its mind over it.

Sigourney Weaver, speaking during a ‘Good Morning America‘ appearance to promote the film, confirmed that Grogu’s snacking habit is very much alive in the new movie, noting that she filmed a scene in which the little creature tried to steal her food and that “he tries to steal everyone’s food.” That description, coming straight from a cast member, only adds to what fans already know: Grogu’s relationship with food is not a background quirk but a core part of his personality that the filmmakers have deliberately leaned into at every opportunity.

Director Jon Favreau has spoken about how Grogu has evolved considerably since the early days of the series, noting that the character can now go underwater, climb, and use the Force with increasing confidence, describing the new film as a moment where Grogu steps forward as a genuine partner alongside Din Djarin rather than simply a companion who needs rescuing. Yet for all that growth, the creature’s relationship with food remains wonderfully unchanged. Favreau has also pointed to Grogu’s enormous pop culture reach as a central reason the character was chosen to lead Star Wars back to theaters, saying that “Baby Yoda was everywhere” and that these are characters people became aware of even without having seen a single episode of the series.

Fresh audience data from Screen Engine/ASI shows that ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ earned 4.74% of all audience mentions in a recent entertainment interest survey, placing it ahead of several other major releases and suggesting that pre-release excitement for the film is stronger than many early projections implied. That figure speaks to something the lemon clip illustrates beautifully. Grogu does not need elaborate action sequences or dramatic revelations to generate buzz. He just needs a piece of fruit and twelve seconds of screen time.

The film itself carries genuine weight as the first Star Wars theatrical release in nearly seven years, with Favreau directing from a script co-written alongside Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor, and the cast including Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, and Jeremy Allen White. All of that is exciting, but right now, the clip of a tiny green alien encountering a lemon is doing more to win hearts than any trailer could.

Whether Grogu ends up approving of citrus is a question that 50-year Star Wars veterans and brand-new fans alike seem desperate to answer, so share your thoughts below on whether this little guy’s lemon face is already the most iconic food moment in a galaxy full of them.
