Twilight was one of the most popular movie franchises at the time it was released. The time period when the series was released worked well for the franchise since the theme was perfect for people who got into Harry Potter and wanted something similar. Since then the series fell out of the public favor and was commonly regarded as more of a joke than an actual serious franchise. However, last year there was an enormous revival of the series, and the resurgence of the content across different social media platforms was dubbed The Twilight Renaissance in true Tumblr fashion. This is why most people decided to reconnect with the series with a fresh, new perspective. If you are one of these people you probably asked yourself what is the correct order to watch the series in.
Twilight Movies in Order:
- Twilight (2008)
- Twilight: New Moon (2009)
- Twilight: Eclipse(2010)
- Twilight: Breaking Dawn part 1 (2011)
- Twilight: Breaking Dawn part 2 (2012)
The overall opinion today is that we all may have harbored some undeserved negative feelings towards the series for one reason or another when it first came out to the big screen in 2008. Today the series is regarded as one of those pieces of popular media which are not exactly works of art but are definitely worth watching. If you want to learn more about the best order to watch the series and get some information regarding the future of the series keep reading this article.
Twilight movies in order
The Twilight series is actually quite simple when it comes to the watch order of the series. The books were transformed into the film media in a way that turns each book in the series into one movie, with the exception of the last book which was split into two movies.
The story was released in chronological and while there are certain flashback sequences in the book series they don’t have any major impact on the overall flow of the series.
This approach was embraced by the filmmakers who did take a few different flashbacks from the series and incorporated them into the movies. These scenes are used to explore the past of different characters but are set up in a way that doesn’t disturb the main plot.
Due to this the series follows a pretty chronologically set storyline which is why the best order to watch the movies would be the same order the books were released in, which is coincidently the chronological order as well.
1. Twilight (2008)
The first movie introduces us to the main character of the series Bella Swan. She lives in Arizona with her mother and stepfather, but since he gets transferred to Florida with a new job opportunity Bella is forced to move Forks with her father Charlie.
As she starts the new school year she starts making new friends, but Bella is captivated by a mysterious boy who she later gets paired up with during biology.
Edward doesn’t appear to like her and Bella is set on confronting him regarding his behavior towards her, however, Edward after his absence seems like a completely different person.
An unfortunate event involving Edward stopping a moving van from killing Bella confirms her suspicions about the fact that something regarding Edward seems a bit off.
A few days after the incident Bella and her friends visit the La Push beach and her childhood friend Jacob tells her a story about the cold ones and this intrigues Bella making her question if there could be a connection between Edwards’s behavior and this legend.
This leads her to take a trip to Port Angeles with Jessica and Angela who were shopping for prom dresses in order to visit a book shop that has a book about the cold ones.
While leaving the book store Bella get cornered by a group of guy and Edward comes to rescue her which leads to two of them having dinner. During dinner, Edward admits that he can read people’s minds and after an in-depth conversation about his abilities Bella is determined to continue her investigation.
After discovering that Edward is a vampire Bella confronts him and the two eventually start to date. While out and about with Edward’s family Bella attracts a bypassing group of vampires and catches the attention of their tracker who gets obsessed with her.
To save Bella, the Cullens devise a plant to help her escape Forks to avoid James, however, he manages to trick her by claiming he has captured her mother.
This is the final straw for Bella who decides to run away from the Cullens in order to save her mother. The Cullens figure out she is gone quite quickly and thanks to Alice’s gift they are able to determine where Bella is headed to.
The Cullens get to the studio where James lured Bella and captured her, however, before they make it James bites Bella, and with that act commences the process of turning Bella into a vampire.
While the rest of the family is dealing with James, Edward is faced with the choice he fears the most. He needs to decide whether he’ll let Bella change or try to suck the venom out of her system.
In the end, Bella is saved and the Cullens stage the event to look like she injured herself while on the run. The movie ends with Bella and Edward attending prom and discussing the fact that she wants to become a vampire while being observed by Veronica who is planning her revenge.
2. The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009)
The second movie picks up shortly after the end of the first one. The opening scene takes place on Bella’s eighteenth birthday and it highlights the main theme of the movie.
New Moon deals with the conflict between Bella and Edward regarding her mortality. Bella has her mindset on becoming a vampire to spend the rest of eternity with Edward and despite wanting the same Edward can’t bring himself to do change her.
During Bella’s birthday celebration at Cullen’s residence, she cuts her finger while opening a present and the blood from her cut causes Jasper to lose control and attack her.
This is a determining factor for Edward and it solidifies his decision to move away from Forks to allow Bella to live a normal life. The two meet in the woods and Edward explains his decision before leaving Bella on her own in the middle of the woods.
Bella falls into a state of depression and only starts getting better months later. This is when she starts to reconnect with her friends. During one night out with Jessica she realizes that she can see Edward while she is in danger.
This new revelation drives her to do a lot of dangerous things, one of which is driving a motorbike. To achieve this Bella buys two motorbikes and asks her childhood friend Jacob to help her repair them.
The two grow closer together but all of a sudden Jacob starts acting weird. While looking for him, Bella encounters Laurent, who informs her that Victoria wants to kill her to get back to Edward for killing James.
Before Laurent has the chance to harm Bella in any way she is rescued by an enormous wolf that kills him. Shortly after, Bella discovers that Jacob is a werewolf and the rest of his tribe shares the same fate.
Bella continues her string of adrenaline-inducing activities in order to see Edward, but after Bella goes cliff jumping with Jacob’s friends, Edward gets a vision and interprets it as Bella killing herself.
This prompts Alice to come back to Forks and help her change Edward’s mind. He is headed to Italy to visit the Volturi and request his execution. After his request is denied Edward decides to make himself known to unsuspecting people in order to cause his own death.
Thankfully, Bella makes it just in time to stop him. The happy reunion is interrupted by Jane who requests the presence of the trio before the Volturi.
They conclude that Bella is a big liability for their kind and inform them that they’ll let Bella live only if she gets turned into one of them. Upon returning to Forks the Cullens vote on this and decide they will turn Bella into a vampire.
3. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010)
The third movie is the one where we finally explore a plot point that was set up at the end of the first movie. The events of this movie deal with the Cullens dealing with Victoria and her desire to kill Bella.
The movie opens with a scene that shows Victoria turning a young student named Riley Biers into a vampire to help her execute her plan against the Cullens.
Alice’s visions warn the Cullens of Victoria’s plans and they start preparing for her arrival. The group quickly figures out that she is assembling an army of newborn vampires.
In the wake of this vision, Edward takes Bella to Jacksonville to visit her mother while the rest of the group tries to take down Victoria in Forks. She manages to escape but not before trespassing the werewolf territory which now means they’ll participate in the fight as well.
To combat this, Jasper who is familiar with newborns and the way they can be utilized in fights, trains the family to prepare them for the attack.
Victoria’s army eventually grows so big that they attract the attention of the Volturi, however, they decide to let the things between Victoria and the Cullens play out since they feel out of their favor after the incident with Bella.
Alice gets another vision of the army during their graduation celebration party, while Jacob is there and he agrees that the werewolves will help them fight much to Bella’s dismay.
In the portion of the movie between the preparation and the actual fight, we further explore the themes set in the second movie. We get a quick glimpse into Rosalie’s past and how she became a vampire.
She reveals that she voted against Bella’s turning since she would have wanted someone to vote in such a way for her. The two have a quick bonding moment when she admits that she doesn’t actually dislike Bella but rather envies Bella for mortality.
We get a similar conversation between Bella and Edward where they discuss the conditions of her turning into a vampire. Edward reluctantly agrees to the action under the condition that the two get married first.
The day before the fight Bella, Edward, and Jacob camp out on the mountain top to keep her safer. There the love triangle between the three finally gets resolved after Jacob kisses Bella and she realizes that while she loves Jacob, those feelings cannot be compared to the love she feels for Edward.
The fight ensues and the Cullens manage to defeat the army without losing anyone from their own group aside from Jacob getting injured while protecting Leah.
Victoria and Riely find Bella and Edward but they manage to defeat the two and return to the rest of the group. The Volturi delegation finally makes their appearance and Jane points out that Bella is still human but the Cullens retaliate by saying that the date has already been set.
4. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 (2011)
A few months after the events of the previous film, it is the day of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen’s wedding and Bella is preparing with the help of Edward’s sisters Alice and Rosalie and Renee, her mother.
Bella is pleasantly surprised to see Jacob returned and the two share a dance in the woods. Bella admits that she and Edward plan to consummate their marriage on their honeymoon while she is still human. Jacob becomes furious, knowing that such an act could kill her.
Two weeks after the wedding, Bella starts to believe she is pregnant. Edward is distraught as he knows it is highly unlikely a human will survive giving birth to a vampire’s baby.
After seeing Bella upon her return to Forks Jacob is furious and shares the same concerns as Edward. Despite Carlisle’s advice to terminate the pregnancy, Bella refuses to do so.
In his anger, Jacob informs Sam of Bella’s condition and he is determined to kill Bella since he believes the child will not be able to contain their bloodthirst after their birth.
Since Jacob doesn’t want to hurt Bella he fights with Sam and the pack ends up separating into two; one lead by Sam and the other one led by Jacob.
As the pregnancy progresses Bella’s health quickly deteriorates and since the baby is growing at a rapid rate it becomes apparent that Bella most likely won’t be able to carry the pregnancy to term.
The only thing that somewhat helps her condition is drinking human blood in order to feed the baby. Everyone’s worst fears come true once Bella collapses during a conversation with Edward and they quickly realize both Bella and the baby will not survive unless they do something.
The two start performing a cesarean section and it seems that the procedure has helped but while Bella and Edward are sharing a moment with their newborn child her heart stops beating.
Jacob and Edward try to bring Bella back to life but nothing seems to help. This leads Edward to try changing Bella in desperation but the attempt remains unsuccessful.
Both men are distraught by the knowledge that Bella has died and Jacob tries to kill Edward but ultimately leaves stating that the worst punishment Edward could endure would be living with the knowledge that he killed Bella.
In his anger, he wants to kill their newborn daughter Renesmee but he ends up imprinting on her. This causes the werewolves who showed up to kill Renesmee to leave since their laws clearly state that they aren’t allowed to harm anyone who has been imprinted on.
The ending of the movie reveals that Bella has in fact survived but the venom couldn’t work in a normal way due to the morphine she got before the cesarean section. This caused her transformation to be slower than usual.
This scene is a nice conclusion, however, a mid-credit scene reveals that the Volturi have their sights set on acquiring the new member of the Cullen coven no matter the cost.
5. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (2012)
The aforementioned mid-credit scene sets up the main conflict of the last movie of the series.
Bella, who has recently given birth, awakens from her human-to-vampire transformation and meets her daughter Renesmee for the first time. She is furious when she discovers Jacob has imprinted on Renesmee before Jacob explains what imprinting is.
Carlisle comes to the conclusion that they must leave Forks, Washington in order to protect their identity, especially in light of Charlie. Jacob visits Charlie, anxious not to lose Renesmee, and informs him that Bella is alive and well, but that she had to adapt in order to improve. Jacob also reveals his wolf form to Charlie, telling him he doesn’t exist in the world he feels he does.
Charlie then pays a visit to the Cullens’ home, where he encounters Renesmee. The Cullens are able to stay in Forks and they monitor Renesmee’s rapid growth.
Another vampire, Irina, sees Renesmee, and because she is convinced the child is an immortal child she decides to inform the Volturi. Creating immortal children was prohibited since they presented a huge liability to their kind due to their uncontrollable nature.
The Volturi see this as an opportunity to get what they want and get on their way to Forks, Alice sees this in a vision and sets out on a mission with Jasper to find more evidence to prove Renesmee is not an immortal child.
Before leaving she instructs Carlisle to gather as many witnesses as possible to testify about Renesmee’s true nature. Although they manage to gather a significant number of allies, Edward and Carlisle come to a conclusion that the fight is almost inevitable at this point.
The Volturi arrive ready for war, led by Aro, who is eager to recruit the Cullen coven’s gifted members to his Guard. Aro is allowed to contact Renesmee and comes to the conclusion that she is not an immortal girl.
Irina is brought forward and accepts full blame for her error, which results in her death.
Aro continues to believe that Renesmee will pose a threat in the future, proving his point that combat is important. Before any fighting erupts, Alice and Jasper return, and Alice shares with Aro her vision of the upcoming war, in which both sides will suffer heavy losses, including Aro himself dying.
Aro embraces her vision, allowing Alice and Jasper to reveal Nahuel, their eyewitness who is also a half-human half-vampire, just like Renesmee.
The witness establishes that he is not a threat, confirming Renesmee’s non-threat status. The Volturi depart grudgingly, stating that there will be no fight today.
The last movie ends with an emotional scene where Alice reveals through a vision a happy Bella and Edward looking over a fully matured Renesmee and Jacob happy together. After everything, Bella and Edward visit their meadow, and Bella removes her mental shield finally allowing Edward to read her mind and revisit all of their favorite moments.
Will there be a 6th Twilight movie?
There most likely won’t be a new Twilight movie despite the fact there seems to be a lot of demand for it. The most obvious reason would be the one that serves as a running joke among the fans and that is the fact that it is highly unlikely that main cast members would return to any new projects.
The main cast of the series, Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner publicly expressed their mixed feelings regarding the series and at times outright declared their dislike for it.
The most vocal one out of the three was Robert Pattinson and one of the most popular anecdotes regarding this occurred during promotions or the last movie when one of the fans present there brought the fourth Harry Potter book with them and that particular copy of the Goblet of Fire ended up being the only thing Robert Pattinson signed during the promotions that day.
All of this aside, the franchise actually had two updates since the franchise ended, Midnight Sun and Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined.
Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined was released as a part of the oversized flip-book pairing released as a part of the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the release of the original novel.
The new novel swapped the genders of all characters (aside from Bella’s father) and was the author’s response to the criticism to certain undertones of the original story present due to her religious background.
In Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined, Beaufort Swan, 17, moves to Forks, Washington to be with his estranged father, police Charlie Swan. He meets Edythe Cullen, a girl who seems repulsed by him at first but warms up to him.
Their relationship grows over time and they fall in love. However, a tracker vampire decides to hunt Beau for sport and takes his mother, Renée Dwyer, away from him.
Joss attacks Beau, but Edythe, along with the rest of the Cullen family, rescues Beau before Joss can kill him. Unfortunately, Joss has already bitten him and the venom has spread too far into his system.
The Cullens fake Beau’s death for his privacy, and he continues his relationship with Edythe. Sometime later, the Quileute wolves confront the Cullens, believing them responsible for Beau’s death, but the Cullens reveal the truth to them.
Although the reception wasn’t great when the novel was originally released, newer reviews point out that the novel is a fun play on the original series and something anyone would enjoy.
The second book, Midnight Sun, was supposed to be released back to back with the original series, however, the first twelve chapters were leaked and despite the clear excitement from the fans, Stephanie Mayer was devastated by this act and decided to abandon the project.
But in 2020, when no one was expecting it, she released the almost forgotten novel which retold the story of the first book and movie, but this time from Edward’s perspective.
The reception of this book was extremely divided. Some fans believe that the book was overly detailed and too long which all causes it to be unable to survive as a standalone book.
On the other hand, some people claim that Stephanie Mayer used extreme details and overly explanatory narration as a brilliant way to depict what Edward’s world looks like given that he can read everyone’s mind.
So far there haven’t been any announcements regarding any new movies in the franchise, however, after taking the new spike in popularity we can’t say that it is impossible that someone else will pick one of these two books and turn them into movies.
