One of the Netflix shows that fans were recently most excited about is Wednesday, which is an Addams Family adaptation that focuses more on the titular character of the series. The series tells the story of her teenage years as she attends Nevermore Academy after transferring from eight different schools in a span of five years. Of course, Nevermore is a secluded school for special teenagers. So, in that regard, where was Wednesday filmed?
Wednesday was filmed in Bucharest, Romania, as the filming began during the second week of September 2021 and concluded on March 30, 2022. The series was filmed almost entirely in Bucharest, as the entire crew spent more than six months filming the entire show there.
The fact that Bucharest was chosen as the site for the filming was interesting, especially considering that Nevermore Academy is kind of an old castle-like place that should be difficult to find anywhere else in the world other than a place like Romania. So, with that said, let’s look at Wednesday’s filming locations.
Where Is Wednesday Set?
Wednesday, ever since it was announced, was one of the series that fans were incredibly excited about, especially considering that it was directed by Tim Burton. Of course, this series is an adaptation of the famous Addams Family franchise but focuses more on the storyline of Wednesday Addams, who we know is the goth teenage daughter of Gomez and Morticia.
The basic plotline of Wednesday focuses on her troubles in school as she had to move from one school to another eight times in a span of five years. That’s because she was never really into people at all, as she can be quite violent when needed. And because she had to move from one school to another eight times, that was when her parents finally decided to enroll her in Nevermore Academy, where Gomez and Morticia met 25 years ago.
Nevermore Academy, of course, is a school where kids that aren’t conventional tend to go to, as there are numerous groups of supernatural creatures, such as vampires, werewolves, and sirens, that go to this school. As such, this was the perfect place for Wednesday to go, except for the fact that she had a general dislike for people, regardless of what kind of people they may be.
Considering that Nevermore Academy is a school that is secluded from modern society, it is located deep in the forests of New England in the United States. As such, Wednesday didn’t have to move to another country to attend a new school, as she merely had to move to New England. Of course, the Addams Family has almost always been portrayed as living in a suburban New Jersey settlement, and that means that this is probably the first time that Wednesday gets to live in a place far from any urban or suburban settlement.
Nevermore is also the primary setting of the entire series, even though some scenes included the time when Wednesday was still attending her own school. There were also scenes that included Gomez and Morticia in their home. But the fact is that because Wednesday is the focus character of the series, it is primarily set in Nevermore Academy.
Where Was Wednesday Filmed?
While it might be true that the setting of Wednesday is primarily Nevermore Academy, which is located deep in the forests of New England, the thing is that the entire series wasn’t even filmed in New England or in the United States. That’s because Nevermore Academy features an old European castle-like design that isn’t something you’ll normally see in the United States. As such, the entire filming was done in Bucharest, Romania.
Like a lot of old European cities, Bucharest is home to plenty of different castle-like structures that have existed for hundreds of years and have stood the test of time. That is why one of the castles in Bucharest was used as the primary filming location for Wednesday, considering that the series took place almost entirely in Nevermore Academy.
The filming of Wednesday began on September 13, 2021, as that was when the entire began working on the series in Bucharest, Romania. Wednesday took more than six months to wrap up its filming, as it was concluded on March 30, 2022.
Jenna Ortega, who stars as the titular character in Wednesday, said this in a Deadline interview:
“I would call my parents every night in a panic because I felt like it was different from any job I had ever done before where I typically have that time to sit into the character. I got out to Romania, and we started training and shooting immediately. We didn’t really have time for rehearsals. I remember it being very stressful and confusing. I did the best I could, but that’s probably the most overwhelming job I’ve ever had. There have never been so many cooks in the kitchen. I was completely lost and confused. Typically, I have no problem using my voice, but when you’re in it—I just remember feeling defeated after the first month. So, I think something really wonderful that has come out of the show is that I can use my voice in a much stronger way than I ever have… which I’m really grateful for.”
In that regard, it was probably difficult for her to film the entire series in Bucharest, considering that she was far away from family and probably didn’t have the luxury of going back home whenever she had to. That said, despite the fact that she struggled to play her role, it was great that she ended up overcoming her early problems, as we are only excited to see her portrayal of the classic character once the series gets released on November 23, 2022.
