What are SMILEs in One Piece & How Are They Made?

The Devil Fruits are a well-known concept in the world of One Piece. They are natural and can be found in different regions of the world. But, did you know that there are also artificial “Devil Fruits”? The SMILEs are a relatively recent concept and are actually artificial Zoan Devil Fruits created with SAD, a substance produced in a lab within Punk Hazard, the SAD Production Room, and kept within a huge metal vat. In this article, we are going to tell you everything you need to know about the SMILEs in One Piece and how they are made.

SMILEs are artificial Zoan-type Devil Fruits made from SAD. They were produced by Donquixote Doflamingo and Caesar Clown and consumed by the Beasts Pirates, who formed a division known as Gifters. SMILEs don’t have proper names like normal Devil Fruits, but are referred to as “SMILE of (name of animal)”.

What are SMILEs in One Piece?

The SMILEs resemble the artificial devil fruit that Vegapunk synthesized; they are colorful fruits that are reminiscent of apples but with a kind of circles of another color on the skin and within these another smaller circle. The goal of the SMILEs is to grant the power to transform into an animal, just like Zoan-type Devil Fruits do.

However, only one in ten will successfully grant this power. Therefore, most people who try them do not gain any power and furthermore lose the ability to swim along with the inability to show negative expressions, thus being forced to smile all the time for life. Defective fruits maintain this secondary effect after being bitten.

Even if the user of SMILE manages to be successful and gain powers, it is possible due to the instability of the artificial fruits that they transform part of their bodies permanently into that of an animal, only those who have achieved “stronger abilities” being able to transform parts. of the body into non-corresponding body parts of the animal they are based on, such as Sheepshead, who transforms his hands into ram’s horns.

Others appear to have animals growing on their heads, giving them the appearance of hats or fur, as seen on users of Fox and Walrus SMILEs. In particular, SMILE users are susceptible to Tama’s powers, meaning that if they eat one of his kibi-dangos, they will come under his control. SMILE users have been seen possessing the power of a wide variety of animals, from mammals to reptiles and crustaceans.

Although, many of the fruits have not been named and it seems that the same power can be repeated in several of them, although they manifest in different ways. It is unknown if they are “models” similar to normal zoan-type fruits or if they simply grant the same power but in a different way.

How are SMILEs made?

The main component of the SMILEs is SAD, a substance that only Caesar Clown knows how to synthesize. Therefore, the production of SMILEs requires your collaboration. First, Caesar synthesizes the SAD, and then it is transported to the SMILE factory in Dressrosa, where it is processed, allowing the fruits to absorb the substance and become SMILEs.

Because the dwarves of the Tontatta tribe can grow any type of plant, they were forced to produce SMILEs under the delusion that it was all to make a medicine to cure Princess Mansherry to increase the production rate of the fruits. It seems that the Tontatta are capable of generating nine faulty fruits out of ten, which they themselves seem to be aware of due to the nature of said fruits.

The spots of the SMILEs seem to be the indicator of the maturity of the fruit; they start appearing from the top to the bottom. The production process at the SMILEs factory involves the use of luminescent sunflowers that provide light to the trees that produce the fruits and the dumping of SAD into the river.
