What Happened to Scarlet Witch? Did Wanda Die at the End of Multiverse of Madness?
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is already out, and that means that the plot has already been revealed and that fans are in for some surprises. One of the biggest surprises of the film is the fact that Scarlet Witch or Wanda Maximoff is actually the antagonist of the movie. Her prime objective was to capture America Chavez and take her power of multiversal travel as her own so that she could be with her children in another universe. But what happened to Scarlet Witch at the end of Multiverse of Madness?
Scarlet Witch supposedly died at the end of Multiverse of Madness when she sacrificed herself to destroy the darkhold and all of its versions in the other universes. However, we cannot say for certain that she is dead because sources say that she has extended her contract with Marvel for another seven years.
Unless it is going to be confirmed by Marvel Studios or by onscreen events that Wanda Maximoff is indeed dead, there’s nothing that’s totally certain about her fate. Her death in Multiverse of Madness might be a way for her to atone for her mistakes, but there is still a huge story to tell regarding her character. As such, let’s look at what we know about Scarlet Witch’s fate.
What Happened To Scarlet Witch At The End Of Multiverse Of Madness?
The trailers of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have been teasing us about the possibility of Doctor Strange working together with Wanda Maximoff throughout the entire film so that they could resolve a multiversal threat that could change the very fate of the entire multiverse and not just one universe.
However, the truth all along was that Scarlet Witch was the main antagonist of the movie. Her primary goal throughout the film was to capture America Chavez so that she could drain her of her powers and use them for her own benefit. Wanda wanted America’s ability to travel between dimensions and universes so that she could be with her children. On top of that, her mind was corrupted by the darkhold that was introduced during the events of WandaVision.
Essentially, the entire movie involved Doctor Strange and America Chavez traveling from one dimension to another to escape Wanda’s wrath. Meanwhile, Scarlet Witch used the power of the darkhold to chase them around using the other universe’s Wanda by possessing her, all while going on a killing spree. She did eventually acquire America Chavez and sent Doctor Strange and the other universe’s Christine Palmer to a broken universe with another Doctor Strange.
Eventually, Doctor Strange used the darkhold of the broken universe to use a spell that allowed him to use the body of the dead Defender Strange in universe 616, the universe of the main MCU timeline. The zombified Defender Strange was able to momentarily put a stop to Scarlet Witch’s attempt to drain America’s powers.
Meanwhile, as Wong was trying to keep Wanda at bay, Strange convinced America that she could control her powers and that she could use them against Scarlet Witch. In that regard, she used her powers to open a portal to the universe of the aforementioned Wanda and her children. It was the other universe’s Wanda and her scared children that made her realize that she had become a monster.
Realizing that she had become the very evil that she worked hard to destroy when she was with the Avengers, Wanda broke free from the temptation of the darkhold and allowed Wong to escape with America. Meanwhile, she brought down the entire darkhold shrine while she was in it. This effectively destroyed all of the other darkholds in the other universes so that no one would ever be tempted by the darkhold again.
That meant that Wanda did the right thing by destroying the very object that had corrupted her. And by destroying the darkhold, she tried to atone for the mistakes that she had committed stemming all the way from the events of WandaVision when she took an entire town hostage just so she could play house.
Did Wanda Maximoff Really Die At The End Of Multiverse Of Madness?
Essentially, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ended with Wanda Maximoff realizing her own mistakes and seeing for herself that she had become a monster that no longer cared about whether or not she had to take a life to achieve her goal. And she had to bring the entire darkhold around her while she was still in it to make sure that no one would ever get tempted by its powers again.
In that regard, did Wanda Maximoff really die at the end of Multiverse of Madness? Did she survive the destruction of the darkhold?
It is tough to tell whether or not Wanda survived the destruction of the darkhold, considering that a huge structure fell on top of her near the end of the events of the movie. But what we do know is that this might not be the last time we’ll see Wanda in the MCU.
There were reports that confirmed that Elizabeth Olsen, the actress portraying Wanda Maximoff, renewed her contract with Marvel Studios early in March of 2022. The rumor is that her contract extension with Marvel is for another seven years, and that means that there could be more movies or series featuring Wanda Maximoff as one of the characters.
That could also mean that there might be a solo Scarlet Witch movie or something similar to House of M in the future, considering that Marvel would want to make the most out of the next seven years she has as one of the most popular female characters in the MCU today.
As such, it might be safe to say that Wanda Maximoff is still alive out there and was able to survive the destruction of the darkhold. Or it could also be possible that only her 616 version died during the events of Multiverse of Madness and that she might return in the future as a different version of herself coming from a different universe. After all, the general public in the MCU should be more willing to accept a Wanda from another universe compared to the 616 Scarlet Witch that basically murdered countless people in the events of Multiverse of Madness.
Still, if the 616 version of Wanda Maximoff is still alive, it might be possible that her next few appearances in the MCU will be geared towards allowing her to redeem herself after all of her mistakes in WandaVision and in Multiverse of Madness. After all, death is seemingly too easy of a way out for her. As such, we are pretty sure that Scarlet Witch will return to the MCU some time in the future in a different collaboration movie or in her own solo film.
