Elden Ring has taken over the video gaming world ever since it was released on February 25, 2022. Created by FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki and Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, Elden Ring takes place in a world that’s massive and very open. This allows you to freely roam the environment while meeting different types of monsters and creatures along the way. However, when and where does Elden Ring take place?
Elden Ring takes place in a universe and a land that’s entirely unique to the game. It happens in a world called the Lands Between, which is a continent that is original to Elden Ring. Meanwhile, there is no certainty when the game happens, but it does appear to be medieval in its time period.
One of the things that have always been common in FromSoftware games is the fact that the lore isn’t given to you but is something that you have to understand as the game moves along. The same goes for the time period and the world of Elden Ring, as these are things that you need to understand yourself. That said, let’s look at what we know about when and where Elden Ring takes place.
When Does Elden Ring Take Place?
Elden Ring has become one of the most popular games in today’s era, as the Souls-like combat it has coupled with the open-world style of gameplay and the amazing graphics and artistic direction have dazzled different RPG players. And the thing about Elden Ring is that it has a lore that you need to really get into for you to completely understand.
Unlike other games that tend to give you everything you need to know about the story of the game, Elden Ring and other FromSoftware games tend to be a bit uptight in terms of the lore of the game because that’s something that you really need to know more about on your own. The game doesn’t tell you what you need to know about the land or even the time period. In that regard, when does Elden Ring take place?
Elden Ring doesn’t specify a time period for its setting. That’s because the game is set in a world that is unlike our own in the sense that it probably doesn’t follow the same calendar that we use. This is not like any other game because there are some games that tell you what year the game takes place or how many years have passed since a known era in the game.
However, in Elden Ring, you dive into a game that doesn’t take place in a specific time period. It just happens right then and there. But from what you will see in the game, it does look like it takes place during a medieval-like period where machines and other contraptions seem to be rare. This isn’t a technologically advanced world, and that means that its counterpart may be similar to the early second millennium of our real-world calendar.
Where Does Elden Ring Take Place?
Probably the only thing that Elden Ring gives you outright is the setting of the game. This is a game that takes place in its own unique world and setting because it takes place in a continent that is called the Lands Between.
At this point, there aren’t a lot of things that the game tells us about the Lands Between, but we do know that this was a place that was protected by the grace of what is called the Elden Ring. Godwyn the Golden and Queen Marika once ruled over this entire kingdom and allowed it to become prosperous.
But the problem is that the great life in the Lands Between wasn’t natural because the Elden Ring was what was responsible for providing the great bounty that the kingdom enjoyed. However, assassins stole the Rune of Death and killed the Elden Lord. And the Elden Ring ended up getting shattered.
After that, Queen Marika’s children claimed the different shards of the Elden Ring as their own, and these shards ended up tainting their minds to the point that they began waging war against one another. The wars that the different lords waged destroyed the land and turned the different cities to ruin, as you can see from the different ruined buildings and structures in the game.
You take control of a character called a Tarnished, someone who has lost the grace of the Erdtree and was banished from the Lands Between only to return. Considering that the Tarnished come from different places, we can tell that there is more to the world of Elden Ring, as the Lands Between probably isn’t the only area in the world where the game takes place. It’s similar to the Elder Scrolls games that take place in a world with other lands.
Another clue that points to the possibility of the existence of other lands outside the Lands Between is that, in Caelid, you will be able to see a large ship that may have taken people to and from different lands.
Considering that everyone else on the land has become tainted with madness, the Erdtree used whatever power it had left to summon the Tarnished from where they came from back to the Lands Between so that one of them can restore order to the land by collecting all of the different shards of the Elden Ring.
Is Elden Ring Set In The Dark Souls Universe?
It is unclear whether or not Elden Ring is set in the same universe as the Dark Souls games. The Dark Souls games explore the story of the Chosen Undead, who is said to either bring about the age of dark or a new age of fire in the world.
However, we believe that both games happen in different universes. That’s because, in the Dark Souls universe, all of the humans have been afflicted by the undeath curse. Considering that such a curse doesn’t exist in the world of Elden Ring, it is more than likely that this game belongs to an entirely different universe specifically created for the game.
