Who Created Darth Maul’s Spider Legs in ‘Clone Wars’?
One of the most surprising but welcomed revelations in the events of Star Wars: Clone Wars was Darth Maul’s survival. We know that Obi-Wan Kenobi supposedly killed Maul when he bisected him in Naboo. However, for some reason, Maul survived what should have been a fatal situation and even had spider legs where the lower half of his body was supposed to be. But who created Darth Maul’s spider legs?
Darth Maul created his spider legs as he used discarded metal parts to create a six-limb apparatus that allowed him to walk despite losing the lower half of his body. However, he lost his sanity due to his survival, as he became a feral beast before Savage Opress found him.
The fact that Maul survived what should have been fatal was one of the most surprising things in Star Wars. Of course, the Sith Lords have always found a way to survive encounters that should have been fatal, as we all know that the dark side has a lot of unnatural abilities. So, with that said, let’s look at who created Maul’s spider legs.
How Did Darth Maul Survive?
The first Sith Lord that the Jedi Order encountered in around a thousand years was Darth Maul, who revealed himself to be the Sith during the events of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace as the assassin that Darth Sidious sent to kill Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi so that they wouldn’t be able to help Queen Amidala in her quest to free her people from the Trade Federation.
Of course, Maul was so skilled in the dark side of the Force that he was able to defeat a prominent Jedi Master in the form of Qui-Gon Jinn. Obi-Wan Kenobi, however, was able to prove himself worthy of being a true Jedi Knight when he found a way to defeat a much more powerful opponent by bisecting Darth Maul right at the hips to sever the upper half of his body from its lower half. Maul fell down the reactor shaft of Naboo and was presumed dead.
However, we saw that Maul was able to survive his encounter with Kenobi when it was revealed by Mother Talzin in Star Wars: Clone Wars that her son was still alive. That was when Maul’s brother, Savage Opress, was sent to find him. Maul was indeed alive on Lotho Minor and had mechanical spider legs that replaced the lower half of his body. But how did Maul survive?
Well, for one thing, Dathomirian Zabraks have unique physiologies that aren’t exactly similar to humans. They might be near-human species, but Zabraks are known to be physically stronger than humans. That means that they can survive injuries and wounds that should be fatal to most humans.
Of course, Maul was strong in the dark side of the Force and was knowledgeable in Nightsister magick. That means he could use all of his powers to keep himself alive, even though he should have died when Kenobi cut his body in two.
But out of all of the factors that helped Maul’s survival, his anger kept him alive. Maul clung to his hatred and rage to keep himself alive before he could fully recover from the wounds he suffered at Obi-Wan Kenobi’s hands. His hatred for Obi-Wan allowed him to stay alive, as he held on to his hatred for decades until his true death when he was 52 years old. Nevertheless, he was tenacious and angry enough to have survived something that should have killed him.
Despite surviving what should have been a fatal wound, Darth Maul started to slowly lose his sanity. He became a feral creature that only lived to eat while he was on Lotho Minor. In fact, he could bargain with a sentient Anacondan that gave him food when he was a feral animal with rage in his heart. And the thought of taking revenge on Obi-Wan Kenobi allowed him to cling to what remained of his sanity.
How Did Maul Get His Spider Legs?
When Savage Opress found his brother in Lotho Minor, he saw that Maul was now a feral creature with barely any semblance of his sanity left. Of course, Maul could move around because he had mechanical spider legs in place of the legs he lost when he was cut & bisected by Obi-Wan Kenobi. So, how did Maul get his spider legs?
After he fell down the reactor shaft in Naboo, Maul got dumped in the junkyard world of Lotho Minor, which had a lot of mechanical junk. Clinging on to his rage so that he could survive, Maul fashioned himself mechanical legs made from whatever junk he could find on that planet so that he could walk once more after he lost his legs.
As such, it was through his rage and ingenuity that Darth Maul acquired his mechanical spider legs. Nevertheless, he eventually lost his sanity after acquiring his legs as he became a creature of pure rage.
How Did Maul Get His Legs Back?
After Savage Opress rescued his brother in Lotho Minor and convinced him to come with him back to Dathomir, Mother Talzin, who managed to survive the Battle of Dathomir, was able to use her powers to heal her son’s broken mind while also giving him new legs. Talzin knew that Maul was the only person that could avenge her and the Nightsisters after General Grievous killed almost all of them. As such, she was determined to save her son.
Mother Talzin gave Darth Maul a new set of mechanical legs using her Nightsister magick to assemble parts from destroyed battle droids. She equipped these legs on her son, who could now walk on two legs just like before. Maul regained his sanity but still clung to the same rage that fueled him for over a decade.
In that regard, Darth Maul did not get his legs back but only gained a new pair of mechanical legs that allowed him to walk and move like he did before Obi-Wan Kenobi bisected him. And he used these legs to avenge the people that wronged him—Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Sith.
