Toshiro Hitsugaya is one of the most popular characters from Bleach; even Kubo himself said in one interview that he liked Hitsugaya a lot and that he was glad to see that the fans accepted him. The Captain of the 10th Division, he is the youngest among the Captains, and while he is, as a Soul, hundreds of years old, he actually looks like a young boy. Shunsui Kyoraku, the current Captain-Commander, has stated that Hitsugaya is so talented that he might surpass all of them when he reaches their age. But what about Histugaya’s private life? We know that he does not have a romantic interest, but he has been shipped with numerous characters, and in this article, we are going to reveal if he did end up with anyone in the series or not.
No, Toshiro Hitsugaya is not married, and as far as it is known, he does not end up with anyone in the series. Matsumoto is much older than him, and she has a somewhat sisterly attitude towards him. Despite being a friend, Karin is also out of the question as she is a human, and Toshiro, despite looking like her peer, is much older than her. So, as things stand, Toshiro Hitsugaya does not have a romantic interest, and he will not have one in the foreseeable future.
The rest of this article will explore the potential relationships of Toshiro Hitsugaya, one of the most popular characters in the Bleach series. We will explore Toshiro Hitsugaya’s personality in more detail, as well as some of the most popular ships involving him and the characters seen in Bleach. This article won’t contain too many spoilers, but still, be careful how you approach it if you don’t know the whole story.
Toshiro is very focused on his duties, and we don’t see him having a romantic relationship with anyone at the moment
Tōshirō is usually very serious and mature, which can sometimes turn grumpy, which makes him fundamentally different from his vice-commander Rangiku Matsumoto. He’s usually pretty annoyed when other people play dumb, screw up, or draw unnecessary attention to themselves.
Furthermore, it seems as if Hitsugaya doesn’t like childish behavior any more than the sometimes occurring circumstance of being called a child. Furthermore, Tōshirō isn’t particularly fond of his nickname Shirō-chan (roughly: little white) and seems to be particularly annoyed when Momo Hinamori calls him that.
Although he insists on being called Commander Hitsugaya, she often calls him Hitsugaya-kun. He is only addressed by his first name by Ichigo, to his annoyance and despite his protestations, like Byakuya Kuchiki and Kenpachi Zaraki. Also, it seems Tōshirō has a very good intuition, as he was one of the few who saw through Ichimaru Gin’s faux pas, although, understandably, he didn’t see through Sōsuke Aizen’s hypnosis.
Overall, Hitsugaya is quite a grumpy person who is probably so popular because of her character. After stabbing Hinamori in the final fight against Aizen through his hypnosis, he developed post-traumatic stress disorder. When Hinamori’s Reigai asks him about it a little later, he seems to be traumatized by this event. As the two of them fought, Gin Ichimaru remarked how Hitsugaya is like a celestial guardian who is reincarnated every few centuries or, more precisely, an embodiment of such a guardian.
Toshiro Hitsugaya – popular ships explained
In this section, we are going to discuss some of the more probable ships involving Toshiro Hitsugaya:
Rangiku and Toshiro are very close. He is the current Captain of the 10th Division, and Matsumoto is actually his Lieutenant, which shows that he trusts her, despite her nonchalant behavior, which often annoys Toshiro. The two of them have been friends since the time Isshin Shiba was the Division’s Captain.
The two of them are commonly shipped because of the closeness they have and because they are actually together most of the time. But Matumoso is significantly older than Hitsugaya, and she acts like an older sister towards him, which would make this relationship a disaster. On top of that, their personalities are so different that any chance of a meaningful relationship between them is quite small.
We’ve put Rukia here because she is roughly the same age as Toshiro, although the two of them are not very popular ship among the fandom. The two of them are friends and allies, and they even have ice-based Zanpakuto, but while they do have very similar personalities, which would, undoubtedly, work well together, they are not a couple and will not be one.
They respect each other, but there is no chemistry between them; this is also something that will never happen. On top of that, Rukia has since married Renji, so any hopes you might have had about seeing them together are dead now.
This is one of the most popular ships related to Hitsugaya in Bleach. Karin Kurosaki is Ichigo’s sister, and she has interacted with Hitsugaya. There seemed to be some chemistry between them, although the series portrayed their interaction as being friendly. But they liked each other, although the nature of these emotions is unclear.
The main issue here is that, like when we talked about Rukia and Ichigo, Toshiro is a Soul, while Karin is a human. Sure, they look like they’re the same age, but Toshiro is centuries older than Karin. And while it would make sense to see the two of them together, especially since they bring out the best in each other despite their similarly grumpy personalities, we don’t think this one is going to happen because of the differences in their natures.
Yuzu Kurosaki is Karin’s twin sister and, also, Ichigo’s sister. She is also a friend of Hitsugaya’s, and while she never really established a bond with him as Karin, we had to mention her as well.
Yuzu’s personality is completely different from Toshiro’s and Karin’s, which makes sense since Kubo wanted to make the twins distinct, and not just clones of each other. She also never had the time to establish a proper relationship with Hitsugaya, which is why there is no basis for a ship in this case. On top of that, we have the general issue of Toshiro being a Soul and Yuzu being a human, so when we add all of this together, the likelihood of this ship happening is very small.
Momo Hinamori is the Lieutenant of the 5th Division, currently aiding Captain Shinji Hirako; she was also Aizen’s former Lieutenant, and she cared deeply about her Captain, so much that she was even willing to attack Toshiro when Aizen wrongly accused him of murdering him.
On the other hand, the two of them have been friends since childhood, and they grew up in the same district. Toshiro is a bit younger, but the difference is not really visible. On more than one occasion, Toshiro has gone to lengths to protect Momo, and if there is one character in the series he truly cares about and would risk his life for, it is Momo.
She also likes him a lot, and while it seems friendly now, there is certainly more than enough material to discuss a potential ship in this case. In all honesty, if any Toshiro Hitsugaya-related ship ever becomes a reality, we’d bet on this one. They’re both Souls, they like each other and care for each other, they’ve been together since they were kids, and they’re roughly the same age. We’re not sure if Kubo is going to make them a couple later, but if Toshiro ever marries an already-existing character, we would put our money on it being Momo.
We included this one because it is a fan ship we’ve stumbled across online. Hiyori is one of the Visored and the former Lieutenant of the 12th Division; she was, at one point, Hollowfied by Aizen.
The two of them never really interacted much, but Hiyori and Lisa assisted Toshiro in fighting Harribel in Fake Karakura Town. The two of them clashed almost immediately due to both of them being quite grumpy, but when it came to fighting Harriel, they were firm allies.
In that aspect, there is a certain basis for a ship as opposites often attract each other, but because their later interaction was basically minimal and there is no real chemistry between the two of them, we don’t really think that there is any basis for a ship here. They would work out great as friends but as a couple? Not so much. They would be fighting constantly, anyway, which is never a good foundation for a relationship.
