Who was Rocks D. Xebec?

Rocks D. Xebec, more simply known as “Rocks”, is a pirate captain who rose to fame and influence 40 years ago as captain of the Rocks Pirates. According to Sengoku, Rocks D. Xebec is no longer alive but was one of the toughest opponents Garp had faced. Also according to Sengoku, he was Gol D. Roger’s first and arguably most powerful enemy. Having a “D” in his first and last name, he is connected to the will of the D.

He had thick, spiky black hair and a captain’s uniform. The expression on his face when we see him for the first time is smiling. Based on stories of his adventures, Rocks appeared to be an extremely vicious and, at the same time, ambitious man, not caring whom he attacked as long as he could gain power for himself and leading his crew to destroy anyone who interfered with his ambitions.

He was also quite fearless and indiscriminately ruthless, as he had no problem killing the World Nobles or their slaves if it suited his wishes. Rocks’ dream was to become “king of the world”, and he attacked many places and left massive destruction in his wake to assert his dominance. He was also very curious about the subjects that the world government had hidden, which led him to take an interest in these subjects.

Although he led one of the most feared and strongest crews in history, he wasn’t all that respected among them. It is known that Charlotte Linlin had a very low opinion of him, as she said that he never respected her, probably because she was a woman. On the other hand, he also seemed to hurt his crew members, as it is known that he is one of the few people that actually managed to injure Kaidou.

Still, the crew had a shared hatred for the World Government, whose ships they constantly attacked. Everything indicates that the crew wanted to go after God Valley where the World Nobles had their slaves. They temporarily allied against him and defeated him, but Garp kept his association with the late Pirate King a secret.

Who defeated Rocks D. Xebec?

Over forty-four years ago, Xebec founded the Rocks Pirates on the island of Hachinosu and soon became an infamous pirate who represented an era that lasted until Roger became King of the Pirates, committing such atrocities that some came to be erased from history. His subordinates were pirates who would later become legends and even part of the Four Emperors.

Thirty-eight years ago, Rocks led his crew on a mission that endangered the World Nobles and their slaves. In God Valley, the Rocks Pirates clashed with the alliance formed between the Roger Pirates and the Marine army commanded by Monkey D. Garp. The said confrontation would be known as the God Valley incident, in which the Rocks Pirates were finally defeated leading to their dissolution as well as the death of their captain.

Many of Rocks’ crew members would go on to become extremely powerful pirates, notably Edward Newgate, Charlotte Linlin, and Kaidou, who would at some point become three of the Four Emperors of the New World. Rocks’ legacy in history has diminished considerably in the decades since his death, and many younger Marines don’t know who he is.

According to Sengoku, this lack of knowledge about him is mainly due to the intervention of the World Government, as his path led him to dabble in taboo subjects. Also, due to the general lack of camaraderie within the Rocks Pirates, most of Rocks’ previous subordinates are unwilling to talk about his time sailing in the crew.

How strong was Rocks D. Xebec?

Rocks’ strength is unknown in detail but according to Sengoku, in his day he was so powerful that it took the combined efforts of Garp and Roger to break his might. He is also considered Roger’s first and most formidable rival, even more so than Whitebeard. This is bolstered by the fact that Kaidou thinks that Xebec was one of the few people who were able to stand up to him in combat.

He was the captain of the crew but he was not respected at all among his subordinates; his crew was made up of pirates who later became legendary, such as Big Mom, Kaidou, Whitebeard, Shiki, among others. Since none of these pirates liked to follow orders, it goes to show that Rocks was actually a great and authoritative leader. Rocks’ former subordinate, Charlotte Linlin, considered him untrustworthy and a “good for nothing”, someone who disrespected her. He also had the distinction of being one of the few who hurt Kaido. In Sengoku’s memories, Rocks appears wielding a sword.
