Although Black Clover was never the major shonen title of its generation, this still-ongoing manga series has consistently been very popular and has a solid fandom. This resulted in the series finally receiving its first anime movie, Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King, which was released in mid-2023. Now, while the movie was more or less a typical Shonen anime movie, it raised some interesting questions, and while it is not considered a canon work, it expanded the lore in a significant way. This is why this article will also be dedicated to one important moment from the movie, as you are about to find out why Conrad Leto revived the three dead Wizard Kings to help him create a new world.

Conrad Leto revived the three former Wizard Kings because he needed allies who shared his world views. Each of the three wanted a different world and was considered an outcast during their reigns, so Leto picked them. On top of that, all three of them were exceptionally powerful and proved to be useful allies; initially, Leto fought this battle alone, and he realized that he would need allies this time, so he decided to bring the three of them—Princia Funnybunny, Jester Garandros, and Edward Avalaché—back to life.

The rest of this article will focus on Conrad Leto, the former Wizard King, and the motives behind his destructive rampage in the movie Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King. You will find out what exactly he wanted and why he revived three former Wizard Kings to help him. If you don’t know the whole story of the Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King movie, we have to warn you that there will be spoilers in the following paragraphs.

Conrad Leto wanted to destroy the current world and create a new one, and the former Wizard Kings were ideal allies in that endeavor

Now, with the Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King being out, people have finally gotten a glimpse into the long-awaited story behind the character of Conrad Leto, who was announced as the film’s main villain. Conrad Leto expanded the lore of the Black Clover series, but he didn’t really bring much new to the villain trope, as he was mostly a typical villain that we see in a lot of shonen works, especially the movies which are usually non-canon.

But, while Conrad Leto was your typical Shonen anime movie villain, there are still some interesting aspects of his story. We will discuss them in this article, focusing on Leto and his motives. At the movie’s beginning, we see Leto alone, fighting a group of powerful wizards, among which are Julius Novachrono and Mereoleona Vermillion and other powerful wizards.

He is alone in this fight, and despite being quite powerful, he is ultimately defeated by the united powers of these wizards. But he was not dead. Ten years after the first fight, Leto returned to the Clover Kingdom to finish his job, but this time, he had three allies:

  • Princia Funnybunny, the former 11th Wizard King. She was an exceptionally powerful and brutal character who was, during her reign, feared for her strength. She can summon powerful metal soldiers that she uses as a powerful and destructive army. Her attribute is called Legion Magic.
  • Jester Garandros, the former 16th Wizard King. Very frivolous and bruta, Jester is dangerous because of his attitude towards fighting, as his approach makes him even more dangerous. He is an expert swordsman who can use magic to create barriers and weapons. His attribute is called Barrier Magic.
  • Edward Avalaché, the former 20th Wizard King. Edward was a cold and calculating man with extreme power. His ideals and views were such that he thought the weak needed to be changed and eradicated, which is why he was so compatible with Conrad. He could manipulate ice with his magic abilities. His attribute is called Ice Wedge Magic.

Now, all of this wouldn’t really be strange had each of these three not been dead when Leto planned his second attack. But, Leto used his skills to revive them, and they, in turn, became his allies. So, why them? Well, there are several reasons.

First of all, Leto needed allies. The first time around, he was alone, and the united forces of his opponents managed to surpass his powers, which is why he was ultimately defeated. Realizing that, Leto decided that he would need allies for his second attack, but he also knew that these allies could not be just anyone. This brings us to our second reason.

Leto revived these three because they were incredibly powerful. As former Wizard Kings, the three of them were naturally gifted and skilled wizards, and Leto knew that with them by his side, he could certainly win against the combined forces of his opponents this time.

Finally, Leto picked the three of them because they shared an ideology. As we’ve explained, Leto wanted to change the world. During his reign, he was loved by his people, but witnessing the inequalities and unfairness of the world, he decided to change it to create a new and just world in which everyone would be happy and equally strong. But, while the goal was noble, his plan of destroying everything and building a new world from scratch was wrong.

Still, all three of the revived Wizard Kings shared his views. They also wanted to eradicate weakness in the world, and they wanted to get revenge on it because it had shunned them because they were too powerful. They joined Leto because they shared his views, and the four of them together were among the strongest forces that Asta and his allies had to face in the series.
