Welcome to the Ending Explained for Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King, a new anime film based on the popular Black Clover: manga and anime. The film is releasing worldwide on Netflix this weekend and serves as a great olive branch to the Black Clover fandom. The fandom has been starving for more Black Clover content, as the anime is currently on hiatus. So, to make the wait a bit more palatable, Netflix and series creator Yuki Tabata has come up with a movie that will give audiences exactly everything they want in a Black Clover film; great fights, jokes, and some hope that Asta and company will come back soon.
The film is animated by Studio Pierrot, who are actually some of the best in the business. The film isn’t their best job when it comes to animation, though. Some sections of the film look like they could be animated for a weekly anime series instead of a movie. Nevertheless, the film works and achieves the hard goal of entertaining. However, while the fan service aspect of the film is solid enough, the storytelling lacks a bit, with a paper-thin plot and a villain with some very vague motivations. There is also too much talking around redundant philosophy points. We know this is not the place for important character development, but seeing the character say the same thing for an hour straight can become boring.
The following paragraphs contain spoilers for Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King. Read at your own risk.
Who Is Conrad Leto, The Wizard King?
The film begins in the past, at a time before Julius, the current Wizard King, had to revive himself with stored time. Julius is in battle with a very powerful Wizard named Conrad Leto. We learn that Conrad Leto is actually the wizard king of this period, but he has gone mad with power. It seems Conrad plans to destroy the entire world and then rebuild everything from scratch. This is a mad plan, and no amount of good intention would be able to justify such a massacre.
The worst thing is that Conrad can do it thanks to his already amazing magical powers and acquisition of the Imperial Blade. This sword will increase his power to the infinite.
Julius and the other captains decide that Conrad needs to be put down. They band together and manage to stop Conrad in his tracks. Conrad reveals that he intends to cleanse the world and build one anew. He wants to live in a world with no suffering, where everybody can be happy, and where the hard work of every individual can generate success without others trying to put others down.
Conrad’s speech aligns very much with someone like Senator Armstrong from Metal Gear Rising Revengeance. He has good intentions, but he has completely lost his way. He is now a madman working towards genocide.
Conrad cannot be killed, though. He is too powerful. So, Julius and the others choose to trap him under a seal. This method works, and Conrad becomes just a bad stain in the memory of the wizard community. However, the past will always come back to haunt you, and this is exactly what happens in this movie. Asta, Yuno, Noelle, and the other heroes are preparing for a tournament between squads. It is all very exciting, but sadly, we get to see very little of the actual tournament. Why? Because the tournament is interrupted by Conrad, who has managed to escape Julius’ seal.
The moment Julius’ body became that of a child was when the seal started to lose its power. Now, Conrad has managed to dent Julius’ weakness and escape. He still has the Imperial Blade with him, and he has come to finish what he started all those years ago. Conrad is not alone.
He has used ancient magic to revive ancient Wizard Kings who share his vision for a new world. This is really bad news. It basically means that the enemies in this adventure are none other than some of the most powerful wizards in history.
Does Asta And His Friend Defeat The Ancient Wizard Kings?
From this moment, the movie basically evolves into our different heroes coming together and dividing themselves to fight against the ancient Wizard Kings. The ancient Wizard Kings are as follows. Edward Avalaché, Princia Funnybunny, Jester Garandanos, and Conrad Leto himself. Our heroes, accompanied by the current Captain, divide themselves into different matchups. The goal of their attack is to separate the Kings and then try to take the sword away from Conrad. As long as Conrad has the sword in his hands, he will be unstoppable.
Avalaché ends up fighting against Noelle. He seems to be a very proud and powerful wizard. Noelle fails to use her power properly at the beginning of the fight, making the fight go on longer than expected. Princia, on the other hand, ends up fighting against Mereoleona Vermilion, and she has the amazing ability to create warriors. Thanks to the sword’s power, she can create an endless army. Jester Garandanos, a chill and ruthless wizard, ends up fighting against Captain Yami from the Black Bull squad. The matchups are quite interesting, and they manage to make our heroes improve their abilities.
It seems all Wizard Kings share their disappointment with the world’s injustices. However, their fights with our heroes teach them to believe once more in the Wizard community. By the end of the battle, the Wizard Kings pass their will of wanting the world to be a better place to this new generation of wizards. It is quite touching and puts our heroes responsible for making their words true.
Of course, Asta ends up fighting Conrad himself. Conrad seems to trust Asta and his power. At first, he is surprised that someone with no magic like Asta is even part of the squad, but when Asta reveals that his magic is that he never gives up, Conrad’s attitude begins to change. By the end of their fight, Asta had seized the Imperial Blade and managed to strike Conrad down. However, the former Wizard King leaves, happy that there is someone like Asta making sure that the Wizard world goes on the right path. The film ends with Conrad seeing the other Kings’ spirits and wishing that Asta could become the future Wizard King.
