Star Wars: The Clone Wars series belongs to Star Wars Legends. However, fans loved it, as we got to see our favorite characters in a new light. So, when Anakin Skywalker got his first padawan, Ahsoka Tano, they quickly started calling each other Snips and Skyguy. So, why does Anakin call Ahsoka Snips, and she calls him Skyguy in The Clone Wars?

When they first met, Ahsoka called Anakin ‘Skyguy’ as a reference to his last name. He told her not to get ‘snippy’ at him and that she should be taught respect. As their relationship grew, ‘snippy’ became Snips, and the nicknames just stuck.

Honestly, I loved Ahsoka and Anakin’s brother/sister relationship way more than I enjoyed the canon love story between Anakin and Padme Amidala. The Clone Wars aren’t canon, but they are incredibly fun and really worth watching. Here’s everything you need to know about Ahsoka Tano’s relationship with Anakin Skywalker, including their silly nicknames for one another.

What Was The Relationship Between Ahsoka Tano And Anakin Skywalker?

Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker’s relationship grew from somewhat of disdain to a level of respect, all the way to strong yet platonic love. Ahsoka was Anakin’s padawan, and at first, he wasn’t happy with having to train some overly energetic, childing youngling instead of being out there in battle.

However, he grew to like her attitude because, despite showing her Master a healthy amount of respect, she knew how to hold her own and even talked back to him perfectly at times.

They were very much alike and eventually formed a big brother/little sister bond that didn’t end even when she got corrupted by the Dark Side, came back to being herself, and then the same happened to Anakin (only, he didn’t return to being himself).

Their amazing relationship was a joy to watch from the start in The Clone Wars, and it’s actually that “backtalking” that got them the nicknames Snips and Skyguy.

Why Does Anakin Call Ahsoka Snips?

As I’ve mentioned, the relationship between Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker started a bit rocky, to say the least. It began during The Battle of Christophsis, which was the first padawan mission for a 14-year-old Ahsoka.

Master Yoda felt like Anakin was ready to get his first padawan and become a teacher. However, Skywalker didn’t like the idea, as he wanted nothing more than to be in battle by Obi-Wan Kenobi’s side. Anakin felt like Ahsoka would just hold him back, which is why their relationship began with a sense of disdain from the get-go.

When the two met, Anakin toled Ahsoka and Captain Rex that he never wanted a padawan, especially not such an energetic, childish 14-year-old girl.

That’s when she told him, “You’re stuck with me, Skyguy,” to which Captain Rex almost choked in laughter. A visibly irritated Anakin told her, “Don’t you get ‘snippy’ with me, little one!” And just like that, their nicknames were born.

He started calling her Snips, which was a reference to her ‘snippy’ attitude. It started off mockingly, but as time passed and the two grew closer together, Snips became Anakin’s pet name for Ahsoka.

That being said, there was this time when the Dark Side corrupted her, and she openly said to Anakin that she hated when he called her Snips. However, when she snapped out of it and became herself again, things were back to normal, and Ahsoka never minded the nickname again.

Why Does Ahsoka Call Anakin Skyguy?

As I mentioned, Ahsoka called Anakin ‘Skyguy’ the first time they’ve met, which led to him calling her ‘snippy’ and then Snips. But why does Ahsoka call Anakin Skyguy in the first place? Well, it’s quite obvious. He was being ‘snippy’ at him.

His last name is Skywalker, so when he started expressing his discontent about having a padawan, she told him, “You’re stuck with me, Skyguy,” as a reference to his last name. If you read between the lines, it was supposed to show him that she doesn’t think he’s some hotshot super-important figure but just another random Jedi.

Just like Snips started as a mocking nickname for Ahsoka, Skyguy was a mocking nickname for Anakin. However, it later grew into a pet name that the two regularly used in their communication, showing a level of friendship and bond between each other.

Additionally, Ahsoka sometimes called Anakin ‘Master’. Although their relationship wasn’t quite a formal, classic master-padawan relationship, Ahsoka would sometimes refer to Skywalker as ‘Master’ to show her appreciation and respect towards him and everything he had taught her.

How Did The Relationship Between Ahsoka Tano And Anakin Skywalker End?

To me, the relationship between Ahsoka Tano and Anakin Skywalker ended more tragically than most Star Wars love stories. It first ended when Ahsoka decided to leave the Jedi Order after only Anakin stood by her side at her trial. Ahsoka told him that she had to figure things out on her own, without the Order, and without him, turned around and left for good.

It hurt Anakin, it hurt Ahsoka, and it damn sure hurt us fans. What’s even worse, that wasn’t the end of it. Skywalker became Darth Vader and turned to the Dark Side shortly after.

Later, in Star Wars Rebels Season 2, Episode 22, the former Master and Padawan met face to face again. Only this time, it wasn’t Snips and Skyguy. It was Ahsoka Tano and Darth Vader. She told him that, despite turning to the Dark Side, she wouldn’t leave him – not again (I’m not crying, my eyes are sweating).

To that, he responds that Anakin Skywalker is dead, to which Ahsoka says, “Then I will avenge his death.” He reiterates that it’s not the Jedi way to go for revenge, and she gives us one of the most memorable Ahsoka Tano quotes ever: “I am no Jedi.”

After that, they commence in a duel where she holds her own, and their relationship is never repaired. I find them the best duo in the entire Clone Wars series and the best friendship in the entire Star Wars franchise.
