‘Wonder Man’ Was Reportedly Canceled After Becoming Marvel’s “By Far” Least-Watched Live-Action Show

Marvel’s ‘Wonder Man‘ may have had one of the strongest critical receptions of any recent Disney+ series, but new viewership data suggests that its audience was simply too small to keep the show alive.

The series, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, arrived on Disney+ earlier this year with all eight episodes released at once. Marvel initially appeared confident in the show, even renewing it for a second season only two months after its January premiere. That decision was later reversed, leaving the cast and crew surprised.

According to viewership data reported after the cancellation, ‘Wonder Man’ struggled to attract viewers compared with Marvel’s other live-action Disney+ projects. The show reportedly collected 618 million minutes watched during its first week. Since all eight episodes were available immediately, that works out to about 77 million minutes per episode.

That number becomes more revealing when compared with another Marvel series that also received a full-season binge release. ‘Echo’ recorded 731 million minutes during its debut week despite having only five episodes. Its average came to roughly 146 million minutes per episode, almost twice the figure reported for ‘Wonder Man.’

The numbers help explain why Marvel may have changed its mind about continuing the series. While 618 million minutes might sound impressive on its own, streaming services look at how many people are watching, how long they stay, and whether that audience is large enough to justify another season.

For ‘Wonder Man,’ the problem was that strong reviews didn’t appear to translate into a large enough audience. The series currently holds a 91 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of Marvel’s better-reviewed recent television projects. Abdul-Mateen also received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, giving the show another major boost from the entertainment industry.

Despite that recognition, Abdul-Mateen said he wasn’t given much detail about why Marvel decided to cancel the second season. Speaking with Vanity Fair, he explained that he was only told the decision was connected to the show’s performance. “I was told that it had something to do with the viewership numbers,” Abdul-Mateen said, adding that he never saw the actual data behind the decision.

The cancellation was particularly frustrating because the series had already received a second-season order. Showrunner Andrew Guest has also explained that the production went through several difficult stages before reaching Disney+. The show reportedly had poor early test screenings, which eventually led Marvel to change its marketing strategy. That change doesn’t seem to have produced the audience the studio wanted.

There was also a bigger shift happening at Marvel during the show’s release. After years of aggressively expanding its Disney+ lineup, Marvel Studios began cutting back on television projects and spending. The company has been taking a more selective approach to its streaming shows, making audience numbers even more important when deciding what comes next.

Kevin Feige had previously described ‘Wonder Man’ as “extremely different” from Marvel’s usual projects. The series mixed superhero elements with a Hollywood story and a more comedic tone, giving it a very different identity from shows such as ‘Daredevil: Born Again.’ That creative gamble clearly worked for critics, but the reported viewing figures suggest it didn’t reach enough people.

For fans who enjoyed the series, that’s what makes the cancellation so frustrating. ‘Wonder Man’ may have been one of Marvel’s most unusual and well-reviewed shows, but streaming success ultimately depends on more than reviews. In this case, the audience numbers appear to have been the deciding factor.
