Wonder Woman’s DCU Reboot Finally Gets an Update, Courtesy of an Unexpected Source

DC Studios has spent the past few years methodically rebuilding its cinematic universe from the ground up, prioritizing certain characters while leaving others waiting patiently in the wings. Few of those waiting characters carry as much weight or expectation as Wonder Woman, whose live-action future has remained largely a mystery since the studio’s new era began.

That mystery traces back to the cancellation of a planned third solo film under Patty Jenkins, a decision made as James Gunn and Peter Safran reshaped DC’s overall strategy. Since then, fans have had little more than a single writing credit to hold onto, with Ana Nogueira confirmed as the screenwriter tasked with crafting the character’s DCU reboot.

Now, over a year after that writing hire was first announced, the project has finally received a fresh update, though it came from a somewhat unexpected source. ‘Lanterns’ co-creator Tom King addressed the film in a new interview with Inverse, offering fans their first real glimpse of sentiment surrounding the project in more than a year.

King, who has worn multiple hats across DC Studios’ current slate of projects, clarified that Wonder Woman isn’t actually part of his current workload. “For a while I had a job where I was a consultant, like a nerd consultant, so I worked on a lot of different sort of [DC] projects,” King explained. “But between Lanterns and Mister Miracle… I’m not involved in Wonder Woman except to say I hope it’s going to be utterly brilliant.”

He continued by emphasizing just how much weight the character carries within the broader DC mythology. “I hope the people who are building it stay true to who that character is, because she’s just one of the greatest heroines ever created,” he added, making clear that his enthusiasm for the project stems from genuine admiration rather than any direct involvement in its development.

King’s comments also shed light on how DC Studios originally approached building out its current slate. When the new DCU was first being assembled, King was one of several writers brought into an early writers’ room, working alongside Jeremy Slater, Drew Goddard, Crystal Henry, and Christina Hodson.

That collaborative structure suggests Wonder Woman’s reboot, even without King’s direct involvement, likely benefits from institutional knowledge shared across DC’s broader creative pipeline. Nogueira, who previously wrote ‘Supergirl’ and is reportedly also attached to a live-action ‘Teen Titans’ film, continues to be the primary name tied to shaping Diana’s return.

Wonder Woman’s extended absence from DC Studios’ active slate has stood out precisely because of how central she’s historically been to the franchise’s live-action success. Gal Gadot’s performances in the character’s previous solo films remain widely regarded as a highlight of the earlier DC Extended Universe, making her eventual reboot one of the more anticipated projects still waiting in the wings.

That anticipation has only grown as DC Studios’ current strategy under Gunn and Safran continues delivering results, with James Gunn’s own ‘Superman’ having already crossed $409 million at the global box office within its first two weekends of release. That kind of momentum raises the stakes considerably for whatever direction Wonder Woman’s story eventually takes.

With no director, cast, or release timeline yet attached to the project, King’s comments remain more of a hopeful gesture than a concrete update. Still, hearing a prominent DC writer speak so genuinely about wanting the character treated with care offers fans some reassurance that Wonder Woman’s legacy is being taken seriously behind the scenes.

Whether Nogueira’s script ultimately lives up to that hope remains to be seen, but for a project that’s gone largely quiet for over a year, even this modest acknowledgment feels like meaningful progress.
