Marvel has finally given fans a timeline for the next chapter of its beloved animated revival. Season 3 of ‘X-Men ’97’ will debut on Disney+ in 2027, followed by Season 4 the year after that, according to comments from a Marvel Television executive.

The update arrives as excitement around the franchise continues to build following the conclusion of Season 2. With the show’s growing reputation among both longtime fans of the original 1990s series and newcomers, any word on ‘X-Men ’97’ Season 3 carries weight for a fanbase that has waited years for new mutant adventures.

X-Men ’97 Season 3 Release Window

The critically acclaimed animated revival that brought the beloved ’90s X-Men series back to life is returning for another season, with Marvel Television, Animation, Comics and Franchise head Brad Winderbaum confirming the general timing directly.

Speaking with Collider’s Maggie Lovitt at an ‘X-Men ’97’ Season 2 finale screening, Winderbaum said without hesitation that Season 3 is coming out next year and Season 4 the year after that, confirming both seasons will premiere in 2027 and 2028 respectively. That marks a significant shift from the gap between Season 1 and Season 2.

There had previously been a shorter wait time reported between future seasons after the two year gap between Seasons 1 and 2, and producer Larry Houston has said the production problems that caused that delay will not happen again, calling the gap a one off. Winderbaum echoed that sentiment in his own remarks to Collider.

Winderbaum noted that even a year feels too long to him, recalling how he used to watch episodes of the original series every day after school. That personal connection to the franchise has shaped how quickly Marvel wants to move forward with new installments.

‘X-Men ’97’ features Ray Chase, Jennifer Hale, Alison Sealy-Smith, Cal Dodd, J. P. Karliak, Lenore Zann, George Buza, A. J. LoCascio, Holly Chou, Isaac Robinson-Smith, Matthew Waterson, Ross Marquand, and Adrian Hough starring as members of the X-Men. The ensemble blends new talent with familiar voices from decades ago.

Several cast members reprised their roles from the original 1990s series, including Sealy-Smith, Dodd, Zann, Buza, and Hough, along with Christopher Britton and Robert Cait. Other original series stars, including Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Alyson Court, Lawrence Bayne, and Ron Rubin, returned to voice entirely new characters, adding a layer of continuity for fans who grew up with the ’90s show.

Ray Chase voices Cyclops, Jennifer Hale plays Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith voices Storm, and Cal Dodd continues as Wolverine, with J. P. Karliak as Morph, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, and A. J. LoCascio as Gambit. Holly Chou voices Jubilee, Isaac Robinson-Smith plays Bishop, Matthew Waterson voices Magneto, and Adrian Hough voices Nightcrawler. There has been no confirmation yet of any changes to this lineup heading into Season 3.

New Head Writer Steps In

Behind the scenes, ‘X-Men ’97’ has undergone a significant creative shift ahead of its third season. Series creator Beau DeMayo served as head writer for the first two seasons, but Matthew Chauncey took over for the third, with Jake Castorena continuing on as supervising director.

Chauncey succeeds DeMayo, who parted ways with Marvel earlier in 2024, ahead of the show’s March 20 premiere, after completing his work on both Season 1 and Season 2. According to Deadline, which first broke the story exclusively, Chauncey will work alongside Castorena, while Larry Houston along with Eric and Julia Lewald, who executive produced the original ‘X-Men: The Animated Series,’ remain on board as consulting producers.

Chauncey previously worked as a writer and producer on ‘What If…?’ since its first season, and he has since moved up to head writer for that show’s third season as well, replacing A.C. Bradley. He has also worked on the live action ‘Ms. Marvel’ series for Disney+, giving him a broad footprint across Marvel’s television slate heading into this new role.

Reaction from within the production has been positive so far. Director Emi Yonemura, who helmed several episodes of the series, described Chauncey as lovely and a super sweet, incredibly talented writer, adding that the team is already having a great time working with him.

X-Men ’97 Season 4 Already in Motion

Fans worried about another lengthy wait can take some comfort in how far along Marvel already is on future installments. Production on Season 3 was confirmed to have begun in October 2025, and by this past May it was revealed that scripts for Season 4 were already being written. Jake Castorena serves as the show’s supervising producer throughout this extended production push.

Episode counts for the upcoming seasons remain unclear for now. Season 1 of ‘X-Men ’97’ ran for 10 episodes while Season 2 dropped to nine, and the total count for Seasons 3 and 4 has not yet been revealed. Winderbaum expressed some hesitation about lengthening future seasons, explaining that streaming has its own limitations and that episode count is always a factor when deciding how quickly a season can be released.

Despite those constraints, the overall trajectory for the franchise looks stable. It was confirmed in October 2025 that production had begun on Season 3, and with Season 4 scripts already underway, Marvel appears intent on keeping ‘X-Men ’97’ on a consistent annual cadence going forward rather than repeating the extended hiatus between its first two seasons.

The critical response to the series so far has only raised the stakes for what comes next. Metacritic assigned Season 2 a weighted average score of 90 out of 100 based on six reviews, indicating universal acclaim, a benchmark that will follow the show into its next chapter.
