Boruto Uzumaki is the titular protagonist of Masashi Kishimoto’s Boruto, the sequel to his original Naruto franchise. Boruto was born as Naruto’s and Hinata’s son and has become the principal character of his own series. Throughout the years, we have followed Boruto’s growth and evolution from a baby to where he is now, and the story is still ongoing, so we assume that many thrills await us in the future. In this article, of course, we will discuss Boruto Uzumaki as we will tell you about the necklace around his neck.

As seen in the manga and the anime, Boruto’s necklace is actually a bolt tied to a string around his neck. So far, the meaning behind the bolt has not been revealed, but it might be a pun on Boruto’s name. Namely, the word “boruto” is actually the Japanese pronunciation of the English word “bolt,” which is why Boruto’s name is actually a pun on that word, and the bolt around his neck could be a symbol of that pun.

The rest of the article will give you some more information on Boruto’s necklace, as we will explain its symbolism and how it influenced Boruto’s overall appearance. Since there is no precise answer to this, there will be several theories in this article and some spoilers, so be careful how you approach the article if you don’t know everything yet.

What is the necklace around Boruto’s neck?

Before we really give you some hypotheses about Boruto’s necklace, let’s take a look at an analysis of Boruto’s overall appearance since the necklace is also linked to another aspect of his appearance. Boruto has two whisker markings on each cheek, blonde, spiky hair, and blue eyes. Although he has some facial characteristics from his mother, such as the shape of his face and eyes, overall, he is remarkably similar to his father. His tail is suggestive of the stem, and his hairstyle is reminiscent of a leaf. His eyes are a deeper shade of blue than Naruto’s, claims Sarada Uchiha.

The fire symbol was on the left chest of the black tracksuit Boruto wore as a child, and a bolt-like symbol was on the back. He was dressed in white flat sandals and black slacks with red side stripes. Boruto donned a pink shirt and black shorts the day that his father, Naruto, was appointed Hokage. Later, for the ceremony, he changed into a black shirt with a white cloak over it. His attire remained largely the same as before when he was a student at the Academy, except for adding red stripes to his unbuttoned jacket.

He has a bolt hanging around his neck and a white T-shirt below the jacket. With the exception of the forehead protection, his attire remains essentially the same once he becomes a genin. He would subsequently add a brown belt to his pants. Sasuke’s damaged forehead protector and Naruto’s original orange jacket were both temporarily used by Boruto. Boruto received a black diamond-shaped mark in the middle of his palm from Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki after touching his right arm, which he momentarily concealed with bandages.

Later in life, Boruto would obtain a tattoo of his fully developed Kama on his right arm, covering part of his hand, and a scar over his right eye. This tattoo can change blue and runs the length of his right side. He wears a jacket over a white shirt that is identical to the ones he wore when he was younger, as well as unusually short black leggings with red stripes around the borders, long brown shinobi sandals, and a black cape with the bottom inside. He also has a forehead protector split down the middle and an extra stripe that matches the scar on his eye.

As you can see, Boruto’s appearance has changed over the years, but not much. Sure, he grew, and as he grew, he became more of an adult and less of a child, but his overall style and physical appearance have not really changed that much. One could say that he became more mature as the years passed, becoming more similar to his father. Still, he actually preserved his essence, which was also important for hit characterization.

What Year Was Boruto Born?

As you could’ve seen above and read in our text, the bolt symbol was present during Boruto’s life and seemed important to him. As a child, he had a bolt-like symbol on the back of his jacket, while later, he wore an actual bolt around his neck as a necklace. As a bolt is a very unusual symbol in art, we have decided to explore this issue for you and try to explain why the bolt is an important symbol for Boruto.

And if you actually thought that there is some depth here, you don’t know Masashi Kishimoto, who is known for being a troll and a funny guy, and this symbol actually seems to be a result of that and nothing more. Namely, Boruto’s name seems to be the reason behind the bolt symbolism. If you consider the word “boruto” (Japanese: ボルト, boruto), it is actually the Japanese pronunciation of the English word “bolt” and, coincidentally, Boruto’s name.

Kishimoto, of course, did not mean to name his character “bolt,” but it was a funny coincidence that even caused some problems for the publishers. Namely, when Boruto debuted in the English edition of the Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine, his name was initially shown as being “Bolt Uzumaki,” which was an obvious error that was corrected in the next issue. In that aspect, his name is also a reference to one of his cousins, Neji, whose name means “screw” (捻子) in Japanese.

And this is the only theory we have found. It is a very simple explanation and is in line with Kishimoto’s usual style, which is why it perfectly fits as an explanation. The bolt is a very unusual symbol, but it makes perfect sense if you consider this theory.
