One Piece: Why Does Luffy Call Kid Jaggy?
Eustass “Captain” Kid is a renowned pirate from the South Blue who serves as captain of the Kid Pirates. As one of eleven Supernovas who landed on Sabaody two years ago, he is part of what is known as “the worst generation” of pirates in history. He is one of the most feared captains in the world of One Piece and has one of the highest bounties in the series. And yet… Luffy calls him Jaggy. You might be confused as to why one of the most feared pirates in the series is called Jaggy, and if you are, you came to the right place, as we are going to explain everything to you in this article.
There doesn’t seem to be any deeper meaning to this nickname. Luffy calls Eustass Kid “Jaggy” because Kid has jaggy hair. This is actually retaliation for Kid calling Luffy “stupid monkey,” which is a play on his name. The two of them have a very comical relationship, so these two nicknames aren’t really that odd for either of them.
The rest of this article is going to focus on the relationship between Luffy and Eustass Kid. We are going to tell you all the known details about this issue, which still remains one of the more interesting points of the current One Piece narrative. You have to be aware, though, that there are going to be some spoilers in this article, so be careful how you approach it.
Why does Luffy call Kid “Jaggy”?
Every One Piece fan will definitely know this fact. Eustass Kid calls Luffy “stupid monkey,” while – at the same time – Luffy calls Eustass Kid “Jaggy.” Now, Kid’s nickname for Luffy makes sense: his last name is Monkey, and Luffy is generally called stupid throughout the series, hence – “stupid monkey.” (Plus, “stupid” is an epithet commonly associated with monkeys and monkey-like behavior). But what does “Jaggy” mean? It’s not really insulting or anything. It just seems like something you’d call someone who has jaggy hair. And there you have it. That’s the whole story.
Luffy calls Eustass Kid “Jaggy” because Eustass Kid has jaggy hair. There is no other reason behind this nickname and no other explanation. What needs explaining, though, is the relationship between Luffy and Eustass Kid, which is something we are going to provide you with in the upcoming sections of this article so that you can understand everything.
Luffy is Eustass’s primary competitor for the position of future Pirate King. After the war, Whitebeard declared that he wasn’t kind enough to let Luffy do as he pleased. However, Kid appreciates Luffy for attacking a World Noble and being the only Supernova to join the battle because of his acts against the World Government before they even met. After the time jump, he seemed to find Luffy’s arrest at Punk Hazard amusing. They reconnected in a Wano prison, where they grew competitive and quarreled about who would put in the most effort. Deputy Warden Dobon confronted them and attempted to punish them for stealing most of the jail meals, but despite their enmity, they worked together to beat him.

When Queen threatened to drown Kid, Luffy expressed some concern for him as well. Kid rejected Luffy’s offer to join forces to defeat Kaidou after his release because he was still angry over being duped during his previous collaboration with Hawkins and Apoo. He did not want Luffy to have all the praise for defeating Kaido, so he fought with Law and Luffy in the conflict with the Beasts Pirates. As is customary, Luffy refers to him by his nickname, in this case, “Jaggy” (or “Spikey” in some unofficial translations) instead of his name.
As you can see, Luffy and Kid have a pretty dynamic and colorful relationship. Both actually want to become future pirate kings, and both are after the One Piece treasure. They are also both extremely powerful. But, while the two of them are actually rivals, they are not enemies. They are, actually, on the same side, but due to the fact that they have the same goal, they clash sometimes. But, when it came to defeating the villains – like Kaidou and Big Mom – they worked on the same side, despite ultimately going their separate ways.
All of this is in line with how Oda generally portrays his characters and their relationships and is also in line with the overall pirate lore. Their fights and quarrels are a source of many laughs, and the nicknames they have for each other, whose origins we have explained here, are just a factor that contributes to the overall idea of the colorful relationship that these two captains have. And this is the whole story. There isn’t really any deep meaning to these nicknames, and both are just a funny way of showing how their friendship and rivalry work.
