One Piece, as envisioned by Eiichiro Oda, is one of the most popular and entertaining anime and manga series in history. Part of the “Big Three“, along with Bleach and Naruto, One Piece is considered a global anime classic with a large fandom. Now, One Piece has its fair share of mysteries, that is true, but we’re quite sure that the biggest among them is the nature of the titular One Piece treasure. In this article, we are once again going to discuss the titular treasure as we are going to explain the theories about what the titular treasure could be.

Eiichiro Oda has confirmed that One Piece is not a symbolic but rather a physical reward. He did not reveal anything else about it, but we do know that it is a physical object and that it actually does exist and is located on the island of Laugh Tale. Additional information about the titular treasure has not been revealed.

In this article, we are going to tell you everything that we know about the One Piece treasure, i.e., the best theories surrounding the appearance of the One Piece treasure in the series and its lore. This treasure is probably the most mysterious aspect of the whole show and one of the most notable objects in the history of anime, and we are going to give it our best to tell you everything necessary for you to understand its importance.

The One Piece treasure is as mysterious, as it is notorious

The One Piece is the legendary priceless treasure that turns out to be the sum of the items that someone left centuries ago and the treasures of the King of the Pirates, Gol D. Roger. Before his execution, Roger told the world that whoever managed to get there could claim the great treasure, thus ushering in the “Great Age of Pirates.”

It is concealed on Laugh Tale, the Grand Line’s deepest island, named so by Roger himself. Joy Boy left at least a portion of the treasure there during the Void Century. Nobody, besides the Roger and Joy Boy Pirates, is familiar with One Piece. It may have immense personal value but little value given the repeating idea of a treasure.

When Buggy had a flashback of his time with the Roger Pirates, he talked with Shanks about what treasure meant and discovered that everyone in the squad believed in the value of each individual. The Sabaody Archipelago trip was the only time the Straw Hat Pirates ever learned anything about One Piece.

Usopp was halted by Luffy, who explained that the treasure is the reason for his adventures, that if Usopp knew about One Piece, it would be pointless to become the King of the Pirates, and that he would rather stop being a pirate than learn something. With his final breath, Whitebeard verified the treasure’s existence after years of rumors and skepticism. When One Piece was discovered, he said, “Everything will be written in history,” and “a great battle that would engulf the entire world” would occur.

Prior to his demise, Whitebeard—who was referred to as “the Man closest to the One Piece”—broadcast the existence of the One Piece to the entire globe via den den mushi. Many pirates have renewed faith in the existence of the fabled treasure since his death. As you can see, although the One Piece treasure’s existence has been established, little is known about it.

The best theories surrounding the nature of the One Piece treasure

In this section, we are going to bring you some of the best and most popular theories related to the true nature of the One Piece treasure, as talked about in manga and anime.

Ancient Weapon

The first theory is related to the Ancient Weapons of One Piece. The series has implied that three Ancient Weapons are hidden in the world. Crocodile was searching for the great battleship Pluton, whose blueprints were in the possession of Franky’s master, Tom. Poseidon turned out to be the Princess Shirahoshi of the Ryugu Kingdom, who was prophesied to one day command all the sea kings of the world. The whereabouts and identity of Uranus, the final Ancient Weapon, are still unknown, and it has been implied by the fans that Uranus could be the One Piece treasure, but based on the hints we have about Uranus, this is an unlikely outcome.

Devil Fruit

Another theory implies that the Devil Fruits might be connected to the treasure. Scientists in the world of One Piece have tried to debunk these legends, but they haven’t had too much luck in discovering the secrets of the Devil Fruits, which means that the theories surrounding their true nature are still quite popular. This, some fans believe that One Piece is actually a Devil Fruit, but a very special one.

It could be the most powerful of all the Devil Fruits that people fought over and feared centuries ago. It could have the power to erase people’s memories and create something similar to the Void Century. It could be connected to the voice of all things, or it could be connected to the origin of the fruits themselves. This theory is not that improbable, based on our little information, although there is nothing to corroborate it properly.

The Straw Hat

A popular and often running theory is that Luffy’s Straw Hat, which originally belonged to Roger, who then gave it to Shanks, who then gave it to Luffy, is the One Piece treasure. We cannot argue that Luffy’s hat is not crucial to the series canon. Although straw hats aren’t uncommon in the One Piece universe, Luffy’s has a special place in the lore because it is his heirloom and because Gol D. Roger, the King of the Pirates, and Shanks once wore that same hat. Luffy keeps it near to him because of this, even though there have been times when others have seen him without it.

And while Oda has not explicitly denied it, this theory doesn’t make much sense, and it would, honestly, be a big disappointment if the hat turns out to be the big treasure Roger was hiding, so de won’t think that the hat is the key to the story.

A story or a message

We know that Roger and his crew were simply gazing at something when they initially touched on Laugh Tale. Soon after, Roger began to chuckle, and as a result, he gave the island the name Chuckle Tale. This fact seems to be directly related to One Piece and had fans speculating as to why the treasure made Roger laugh.

Some fans think that it was a message of sorts, Joy Boy’s last words, for example, or something more important, like the entire true history of the world. The World Government would have an issue with both of these facts becoming public knowledge. This theory doesn’t make any sense because it would stomp over twenty years of world-building and go against Oda’s claim that One Piece is a physical object.

The Old Kingdom or another piece of history

The theory that One Piece is the Old Kingdom is also a very popular one. The kingdoms that would later come together to establish the World Government ousted a wealthy and advanced empire during the Void Century. The One Piece would thus be something about the Old Kingdom, a metropolis in ruins or possibly a hidden civilization that has been perfectly maintained. It might also have something to do with the ancient writings that mention a civilization existing on the Moon.

This theory became popular after it was featured on a One Piece podcast, but seeing how Oda said it was a physical reward, it doesn’t seem likely to have such grandiose implications.

Hoax

The final theory we are going to mention suggests that One Piece doesn’t exist and that it is all simply a big hoax. And while Oda is known for trolling his readers, with so much world-building and an outright confirmation that One Piece is a physical reward, this theory is basically impossible.
