Tokyo Revengers: The Three “Types” of Future Mikey Explained!
We know that Takemichi is the protagonist of Tokyo Revengers and that his whole journey through time aimed to undo the wrong that the gangs had done. It was also about a lot of other things and a lot of other characters, and in this case, we’re talking about Mikey. Mikey is an exceptionally important character in this series. While some like him and some hate him, no one can deny that he is an exceptionally important figure in the series. In this article, we will explain all you need to know about the three different “types” of Future Mikey seen in the series.
Mikey, from the first timeline, the most important one
Manjiro Sano, also known as Mikey, is initially introduced as the leader and founder of Tokyo Manji and leader of Kanto Manji, as well as the criminal organization Bonten – in one of the futures. This is the first timeline Mikey, and this is the first version we are going to talk about.
Mikey was raised by his grandfather, a martial arts master, since he was a little child. He, therefore, had extensive training. In the former’s dōjō, he shared a home with his grandfather and elder brother. When Emma Sano was in elementary school, she moved in with the Sano family. At that point, he was given the moniker “Mikey” to make his sister feel included despite having a foreign name. Eventually, the two developed an unbreakable relationship as siblings.
When Draken took him to several bullies bigger than them to beat him, Mikey first encountered Draken in the fifth grade. Mikey decides to go meet those guys after developing an interest in Draken. When Mikey first sees them, he gives the leader a flying kick to the face, breaking multiple teeth. Then Mikey extends a friend request to Draken. Mikey and a few buddies decide to start a gang in their first year of high school, which they call Tokyo Manji. He was given the moniker “Invincible Mikey” there for being the gregarious individual everyone knows and for having some of the greatest fighting skills.
But he started to lose his will to fight after seeing the deaths of the people he loved, which resulted in “dark impulses.” When Tokyo Manji Kai and Kanto Manji square off, Mikey uses his “dark impulses” to defeat everyone without being able to tell who is an ally or an adversary. However, Takemichi rises and, seeing Mikey’s next move, hits him, sending him sprawling. Takemichi responds that it was to save him when Mikey questions why he returned.
After two years of returning to the future, he doubts Mikey’s attitude. In response, Mikey says that Waka helped him see that love was the source of all negative impulses. He also discloses the time-traveling nature of his late brother Shinichiro. It is revealed that following a fall he sustained while playing with his plane, Mikey is rendered in a vegetative condition in the “original timeline.” On July 20, 2003, four years later, he passed away. Since Shinichiro can travel back in time, Mikey can escape the accident and is still alive in 2003.
Following his explanation of Shinichiro, Mikey reveals the true source of his “dark impulses,” which impact everyone in his vicinity: the “curse” established when Shinichiro killed the time traveler. Takemichi encourages Mikey to let go of his dark impulses after noticing they are taking over him. Mikey unleashes his dark side by grabbing Sanzu’s katana and impaling Takemichi. Hurt beyond belief, he gives Mikey a bear embrace, instructs him to carry his evil inclinations on his back, and affirms their lifelong friendship.
This makes Mikey wake up, and in a desperate attempt to jump through time again, Takemichi asks for Mikey’s hand. Takemichi promises Mikey to keep trying until everyone can live happily as he passes out. Then Mikey screams in agony as Takemichi passes away. Mikey recognizes Takemichi when he travels back to 1998 and discovers that he has also returned in time. Takemichi and Mikey both rose to prominence as the Tokyo Manji Gang’s commanders and succeeded in uniting all the gangs. Eleven years later, Mikey, a professional drag racer with Draken serving as his mechanic, is among those who attend Takemichi and Hina’s wedding.
“Dark Mikey”
This Mikey was “created” during the Black Dragon Arc, i.e., he is the present version of the Mikey seen in that arc. He has short black hair and is closer to succumbing to his dark desires than he was before. Not much is there to say about this, Mikey, save for the fact that he murdered all Toman administrators and then went to Manila to hide. After attending Mitsuya’s funeral, Takemichi headed to Manila to confront Mikey.
When Takemichi and Naoto arrived in Manila, Mikey asked Takemichi to kill him, which the latter refused to do. Mikey then threatened to kill Takemichi, to which Naoto reacted by shooting Mikey in the back and killing him. And this is the story of the second version of “Future Mikey.”
Final timeline Mikey
This iteration of Mikey is seen during the 18th time leap, where we find out that he is the leader of Bonten, the most dangerous criminal organization in Japan, which deals in various types of criminal activities, including, but not limited to, gambling, fraud, prostitution, and murder. This Mikey, also dubbed “psycho Mikey” or “Izana Mikey,” has short, white hair and his adoptive brother’s, Izana Kurokawa’s, earrings. He has finally succumbed to the darkness within him and has become a feared criminal.
Takemichi opposed Mikey again in this timeline, but Mikey was now fully aware of everything that had transpired. The two of them talked it out, and Takemichi thanked Mikey for saving everyone else while telling him it was now time for him to be saved. What did Mikey do then? He shot Takemichi and went to commit suicide, apparently, but a mortally wounded Takemichi saved him, urging Mikey to save himself. Mikey refused, and after it seemed both were going to die, Takemichi found himself in the past again. This is how it all ended for Future Mikey, as Takemichi was now able to fix everything and create a peaceful timeline.
