Like most crops & plants in Minecraft, trees need adequate conditions to grow. Sometimes, a sapling can pop up right after you plant it, and sometimes it takes a suspiciously long time in order for it to grow into a tree. If it takes too long, something is most definitely wrong. In today’s guide, we’re going to cover how long it takes for a sapling to grow in Minecraft!

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Saplings take between 5 and 30 minutes to grow in Minecraft. This is only an estimate since the growth rate is mostly determined randomly.
  • If saplings take too long to grow into a tree, you haven’t provided them with enough space or adequate light levels.

How do you speed up sapling growth in Minecraft?

You can speed up sapling growth in Minecraft by using bone meal. Every time a sapling attempts to grow, it will check if several conditions have been met. It will check whether it has enough space and enough light to grow. If those conditions are not met, the sapling will skip this growth attempt, and the overall growth will take longer. Using bonemeal, a natural fertilizer, on sapling results in a chance for a sapling to grow instantly which overall speeds up the process of sapling growth. Keep in mind that if the space and size conditions have not been met, using bonemeal on a sapling will not work. Saplings will refuse to grow.

Which tree grows the fastest in Minecraft?

Dark oak grows the fastest in Minecraft; they have better than average wood yield, but farming them is not advisable due to their extremely low sapling yield. The sapling drop rate can be increased by using a tool enchanted with fortune.
Birch trees are second best when it comes to growth as the saplings grow quickly as well, but birch farms are not so viable as their wood-per-sapling drop rate is somewhat low compared to other types of trees.

Do trees grow at night in Minecraft?

Trees can grow at night in Minecraft only if you provide appropriate light levels. Trees in Minecraft need light to grow; more specifically, they need at least a light level of 8. This, however, means that trees technically will not grow at night. But of course, you can always provide trees with alternative light sources, such as torches. That way, your trees can grow at night and also in caves.

Tree growing in a cave with artificial light provided by torches

to sum everything up, your sapling should develop into a full-size tree in 5 to 30 minutes, depending on your luck and the conditions that surround the sapling block. Every time a sapling attempts growth, it will check its conditions, space & light levels. If the sapling doesn’t have enough space to grow or it doesn’t have enough light, it will skip this growth attempt, and in turn, it will grow slower in general. You can speed up the growth of saplings by using bonemeal on them ONLY if the conditions are right.
