‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ Ending Explained: Did Jane & John Survive the Other Smiths?
‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ was just released, the show is a reboot of the already-established movie in 2005 starring Brad Pitt and Angeline Jolie. With everything taken into account ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ takes a completely different approach when compared to the original movie, and it makes for a decent but forgettable experience bringing absolutely nothing new to the table, except for the standout performance by Glover and Erskine. The show pretty much left all the primary questions unanswered and the ending is extremely open-ended. Due to this mysterious ending, we decided to analyze it in more detail and see whether we can come to some rational conclusion as to what happened to John and Jane Smith.

Somwhere down the line HiHi decided to eliminate John and Jane
The last episode was difficult to watch since Jane’s and John’s marriage unraveled in the most gruesome way possible. The thing is I found the pace at which their relationship was progressing too fast, and their relationship ended in a realistic way. This is what happens when you know next to nothing about a person that you’re “married” to and you don’t have time to properly discuss all the important questions.
However, we’re not here to analyze their failing marriage we’re here to answer whether Jane and John are alive in the first place. At the end of Episode 7, we see that John has failed to complete his mission and was given his third strike. He was aware that it was the end of the line for him and he decided to promptly move out, infuriated by Jane’s reaction to the whole affair.
Jane however got the mission to eliminate “her John, and even if she was on the fence about doing it, when her cat Max, was killed and she was attacked in her own kitchen she assumed that John was behind it, getting the same contract as she did and Jane decided to pursue John all over city.
John on the other hand was spending time with his mother and when they returned to the New York apartment that he had purchased for her, he could see that the entrance was booby-trapped and likewise assumed that Jane was behind it.
When the two managed to locate themselves in the city, a grizzly fight between the two of them ensued the two chased each other all across the city with numerous witnesses around, causing explosions, shootouts, and even traffic accidents.

When they were left in the house by themselves, John decided to administer the honesty serum to both of them and after professing their love one last time they figured out that someone third was behind their initial murder attempts.
The other Jane and John Smith were behind the attacks
It didn’t take long for Jane and John to figure out that HiHi – the agency wanted them dead and they had sicced some serious dogs on them – and it was the couple they met during the “Double-Date” episode – the other Jane and John Smith. Still under the effects of the Truth serum Jane and John unfortunately admitted where they stashed their weapons. Everything fell into place at once, John and Jane Smith were dealing with “extremely high-risk assignments” which was fancy talk for eliminating rouge Janes and Johns.

John and Jane managed to eliminate the other John, but in the resulting shooting John was hit in his abdominal area, Jane noticed this only when they reached their panic room. John’s state was severe and he was at risk of bleeding out or massive internal organ failure at any second while Jane was focused on the screen that showed her that Jane was about to break into their panic room.
She knew she had to at least try something to give both her and John a chance at life, although as I’ve said I don’t think John was strong enough to make it to the hospital the only thing keeping him alive at that moment was the fact that he was trying to look out for Jane even in such a severe state.
The last scene can be interpreted in several ways
In the last scene, we can see Jane saying to John that she will count to three, shoot at the other Jane, and then they will get out of the house and call for some help. The scene transitions to the street view of their house and we can see three shots being fired inside the house. There are three ways in which the show could have ended.

1. Jane kills the other Jane and saves John
This is the most likely of the three endings but highly depends on whether the show will get a second season or not. Despite having sociopathic tendencies Jane truly loved John, and considering her manipulative and highly controlling nature it seems unlikely that there is a scenario that she can’t figure her way out of. Jane has absolutely nothing to gain from John’s death now that HiHi has turned on her as well. The only thing she can do is continue to fight back.
2. The other Jane kills John and Jane
This is the more realistic scenario considering that the other Jane had loads of experience more than John and Jane and she was doing this for more than a decade. Jane was also better prepared. The thing that leads me to believe that Jane succeeded in killing both John and Jane are the shots. There were two shots fired nanoseconds apart followed by a few seconds of silence and then a third shot. This would correspond to the other Jane killing Jane and then checking to see whether John is alive and killing him discovering that he was still alive despite his grave injuries.
3. Jane kills the other Jane and John
This is my favorite theory since it aligns with what we’ve learned about Jane’s character. She is a borderline sociopath and she struggles with her emotions, especially around John. It would make perfect sense for Jane to kill the other Jane and John. First of all, Jane was highly ambitious and she stated in more instances that she believed she could handle extremely high-risk assignments something that John was willing to transition to. Jane also realized that eliminating both John and Jane would allow her to do just that and might redeem her in the eyes of the company.
Considering that Jane was angry enough to be able to kill John once before, it’s not as far-fetched to assume that she would be willing to do it again, especially now that she knows that her career and life depend on it. Killing John Jane would be able to advance, get a new more compatible John and she would eliminate the only two known Jane and John that are aware of her identity proving to HiHi that she was the superior agent. You never know with sociopaths.
