After ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ it was clear that changes were coming to the prime Avengers cast in the MCU. Black Widow and Iron Man both sacrificed themselves, closing a significant chapter in the franchise. This left vacancies in the lineup, hinting at the emergence of new faces to take on these roles.

While speculation about the young Avengers was exciting, the reality hasn’t quite met expectations. The MCU has faced challenges recently, with Disney+ shows and cinematic releases experiencing low interest, viewership, and profits. ‘The Marvels’ stands as the lowest-grossing MCU movie to date, highlighting these struggles.

Last year, rumors circulated that Robert Downey Jr. might return to the MCU as Iron Man, sparking disbelief among fans. Despite gaining traction, Kevin Feige had to address them, clarifying that the studio wouldn’t alter Iron Man’s death in ‘Endgame’ in any way. Personally, I agree that changing such a pivotal moment would worsen the current MCU. In a recent interview with Esquire while promoting ‘The Sympathizer,’ Downey expressed his fondness for the role but acknowledged the slim chances of his return to the MCU.

Happily. It’s too integral a part of my DNA. That role chose me. And look, I always say, Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige. It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.

While Stark’s death remains untouchable, it doesn’t rule out Downey’s potential return as a variant. In the Multiverse Saga, all deaths can technically be “reversed” within the context of variants. A prime example is Gamora, who died in ‘Infinity War’ but returned in ‘Endgame’ as her younger variant was unintentionally pulled from the past.
