A old scene that was cut from The Batman is making people look at Penguin’s rise to power in a new way. The clip shows an early moment between Selina Kyle (played by Zoë Kravitz) and Oswald Cobblepot, also known as Penguin, played by Colin Farrell. It was filmed for the 2022 movie but never made it into the final cut.

In the scene, Selina asks to work in the secret club beneath the Iceberg Lounge — a hidden spot where Gotham’s worst criminals hang out. Oz tries to pay her off instead, but she refuses. That’s when he makes a bold statement. “I know you don’t see it yet, honey. But Falcone ain’t gonna be around forever. One day this city is going to be mine.”

That one line feels a lot more powerful now, especially after how things played out in The Penguin series on Max. In the show’s first season, viewers saw Penguin slowly take control of Gotham through violence and betrayal. What he promised in that deleted scene actually came true.

By the end of the series, Penguin is on top. Meanwhile, Cristin Milioti’s character Sofia Falcone ends up locked in Arkham Asylum. She receives a mysterious letter sent by Selina Kyle, something that could point to a new alliance.

Milioti has said she hopes to return as Sofia and has even talked about teaming up with Selina in the future. “If [Sofia and Selina Kyle] were united, we would just really tear s*it up… burn it down. You know what I mean? In a fun way,” she said in an interview with The Direct. She added that she’d love to take on Penguin and Batman together.

It’s still unknown why this scene between Selina and Penguin was cut from the final movie. But it clearly ties into Penguin’s bigger story, which was explored in the Max spin-off series.

While The Penguin season one received a lot of praise and even won awards, there’s already talk about a second season. Colin Farrell had once said he didn’t want to go through the heavy makeup and dark role again, saying, “I never want to put on that f*ck*ng suit and f*ck*ng head again.”

But after finishing season one, he admitted he’d be open to returning. Director Matt Reeves has also said that talks for season two began in late 2024 with showrunner Lauren LeFranc.

This deleted scene adds more depth to Penguin’s character. It shows that his hunger for control didn’t come out of nowhere, he had big plans from the start. It also makes Selina’s role more interesting moving forward.
