Cristin Milioti on ‘The Penguin’ Season 2: “I Would Love Nothing More”

Cristin Milioti has had a busy year. Just two weeks after wrapping her role as Sofia Falcone in The Penguin, she flew to London to film the new Black Mirror movie, USS Callister: Into Infinity. It was a fast switch between two very different but very dark characters.
“I was in like a little bit of a fugue state when I got there,” Milioti said with a laugh about how quickly she moved from one set to the next. “Two weeks was a quick turnaround!”
Playing Sofia Falcone, a crime boss in the Batman spinoff series The Penguin, was a big deal for Milioti. Even though she has now moved on to Black Mirror, fans keep asking if she will return for season two of The Penguin.
“I get asked a lot and my answer is always the same — but it is the most genuine answer, which is that I would love nothing more,” she said. “No conversations as of yet, but I would love it. I had the time of my life, so my answer would be yes.”
When asked if any part of Sofia followed her into USS Callister: Into Infinity, Milioti laughed and said there might have been a tiny bit of Sofia in one final scene when her Black Mirror character looks in the mirror: “I feel like I saw a flinch of Sofia at the very end.”
In USS Callister: Into Infinity, Milioti plays two versions of the same character — the real Nanette and a digital clone inside a deadly space game. Both versions of Nanette are traumatized and have to make tough choices, much like Sofia in The Penguin.
The filming process for Black Mirror was intense. Milioti had to jump back and forth between playing real Nanette and the digital Nanette, sometimes filming both versions in the same day. “It was nuts,” she said. “It was really wild. It was mind-blowing.”
She explained how difficult it was to act opposite herself: “Sometimes I had a stand-in. Sometimes it was just me alone in a space looking at different dots all over set and trying to remember the exact cadence of ‘we’ — being myself and I — took a beat here.”
While The Penguin and Black Mirror are very different, both shows let Milioti explore deep, emotional roles. She loves playing strong, complex women — even if they come from dark worlds. And she’s open to doing more.
When asked if she’d want to return to Gotham as Sofia Falcone, she didn’t hesitate: “Yeah, I don’t want to wait seven years for anything.”
