James Gunn Responds to ‘Superman 2’ Release Date Question With Unexpected Answer
James Gunn has fans talking after a surprising comment about the future of Superman movies. During a conversation on Threads, a fan asked Gunn about the release date for Superman 2.
Gunn replied with the short but mysterious message: “Define ‘Superman 2.’” That simple answer has now started rumors that the next Superman movie might not be a normal sequel.

Before this, Gunn had also hinted that the next Superman story would be “a little different than what one might expect.” This has led many people to believe that instead of a regular Superman-only sequel, the next movie might be a crossover with other heroes.
So far, Warner Bros. and DC Studios haven’t officially confirmed any sequel, but it looks like plans are starting to take shape.
David Corenswet, who plays Superman, said in a Vanity Fair interview that he already signed a contract for another Superman movie. However, Gunn, who runs DC Studios with Peter Safran, has made it clear that no movie will move forward until a script is finished. His recent comments suggest the next film may not focus only on Superman.
The only officially announced follow-up to Superman is Supergirl, which comes out on June 26, 2026. Milly Alcock will play Supergirl in that movie. After Gunn’s latest comment, some fans believe that Superman could appear in Supergirl’s film.
Others think the next big Superman project might include both him and Supergirl fighting a villain like Brainiac. Some fans even hope for a “World’s Finest” movie where Superman teams up with Batman.
The end of the Superman movie also gives clues about what could come next. In a post-credits scene, Superman and Mister Terrific are seen discussing the damage caused by Lex Luthor, suggesting there are problems still left to solve. The movie also introduced new characters like The Engineer and hinted at bigger alien threats, as well as mysteries about Superman’s Kryptonian parents.
Gunn’s latest teaser fits with the way DC Studios is building its new universe. He has said before that the plan is to create connected stories, but without making audiences feel like they have to watch every single movie or show to understand what’s happening.
With characters like Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, and Jimmy Olsen already part of the story, the next Superman movie could easily bring in more heroes or new villains.
In addition to movies, reports from sources like WSJ say that Gunn and Safran are thinking about making spin-off shows. These shows could focus on characters like Mister Terrific or Jimmy Olsen. It was also reported that DC Studios wants to bring Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman together in a new Justice League movie sometime in the future.
While no official release date has been given for Superman 2, it now seems likely that whatever comes next for the Man of Steel might be bigger than a simple solo adventure.
