India’s Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has removed 41 seconds from the new Warner Bros. DC movie Superman. The board said some scenes were “overly sensual,” which led to the cuts.

The parts cut from the film shown in India include two kissing scenes between Superman (played by David Corenswet) and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan).

Also removed was a brief moment where Guy Gardner, one of the Green Lanterns played by Nathan Fillion, flashes a middle finger using his super-powered ring during a fight.

According to a report by Bollywood Hungama and shared by The Wrap, the eight-second gesture was labeled as a “foul gesture” by the CBFC.

Despite these edits, Superman became the top movie in India, with the biggest opening weekend ever for a DC film there, Warner Bros. India shared on X. The movie is available in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu in theaters across the country.

Superman isn’t the only film to face censorship in India recently. The Apple Original film F1 was edited by the studio before it was even submitted to the CBFC. For example, a scene where Brad Pitt’s character sends a middle finger emoji was changed to a fist bump, a move the board was expected to ask for.

Fans in India are unhappy about missing the kiss scenes between Lois and Clark, especially since the chemistry between Brosnahan and Corenswet has been widely praised during Superman’s press tour.

Brosnahan told People magazine about how she and Corenswet connected. She said, “We’d had this brief but obviously impactful moment together during our chemistry read… but I think we [David and I] both left feeling like we didn’t remember anything about it, and wanted to spend some time together. We had a really lovely breakfast [in New York] after we found out we were going to be playing the roles together… and got to know each other that way.”

Corenswet also shared, “The next thing that happened was we found out we were cast. We didn’t know each other at all.”
