With David Corenswet’s Superman now doing great at the box office and Milly Alcock’s Supergirl coming next year, many DC fans are wondering when two other big heroes, Batman and Wonder Woman, will finally show up in the new DC Universe. So far, neither character has been cast in James Gunn’s new DCU, but there’s been a small update.

Speaking to Urbana Play radio, DC Studios boss James Gunn explained that it all comes down to the writing. He said both scripts are still being worked on, and nothing will move forward until they’re done. Gunn said, “I mean, it’s not going to be until the scripts are ready. So, both the scripts are being written now, and, if they’re good, then we’ll go into production immediately.” He also added, “So it really depends on how we can get the scripts done, because the one thing I’m just not going to do is go into production without a script that I feel is fantastic, especially for those characters who deserve the best. I’d rather wait a year than go too soon.”

Gunn has talked before about how much he cares about having strong scripts before making a movie. He recently shared that he chose Supergirl as the next film because of its “incredible script.” He also said that Clayface, another unexpected project, was picked for similar reasons, after reading Mike Flanagan’s horror-style script. As for Batman and Wonder Woman, both scripts are still in progress, and Gunn made it clear he’s waiting to see if they turn out good enough to move ahead.

For Batman, there’s a movie called The Brave and the Bold planned, which will focus on Batman and his son Damian Wayne as Robin. Gunn earlier described it as “a strange father and son story about the two of them and based on Grant Morrison’s run of the Batman.” This version of Batman will be different from Robert Pattinson’s Batman, which continues in its own separate universe called Elseworlds.

In a recent chat with GamesRadar+, Gunn gave a small update, saying there’s “really no new updates” on the Batman movie yet, though a screenwriter is working on it now.

When it comes to Wonder Woman, there’s even less to report. After DC cancelled the third Gal Gadot movie, Gunn confirmed earlier this year that a new Wonder Woman film is planned, but no actress has been chosen. He did respond to fans suggesting Adria Arjona for the role, saying she would be “great”, though he added that it’s far too early to say anything for sure.

However, a Wonder Woman prequel series called Paradise Lost is already being developed. This series will focus on the island of Themyscira, home of the Amazons, before Diana’s time.

For now, Gunn and DC fans are waiting to see how the Batman and Wonder Woman scripts turn out. If Gunn likes them, the movies could happen sooner than expected. But until then, nothing is certain.

Meanwhile, Superman is in theaters now, and Supergirl will be flying in next year.
