George R.R. Martin Calls James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ One of the Best Superman Movies Ever
James Gunn’s Superman is making waves, and the praise is coming from some big names, including George R.R. Martin, the author of the famous A Song of Ice and Fire series.
The movie just came out and is already getting great reviews around the world while smashing box office records. It’s been a strong start for the live-action part of the DC Universe, delivering everything Superman fans expect: hope, determination, emotional moments, and even some humor.
George R.R. Martin shared his thoughts about the movie on his blog. He said it’s one of the best Superman movies ever made. “It’s been months since Parris and I last went to the movies, but we finally got out of the house last week, and bopped down to the Violet Crown to catch SUPERMAN. I’m glad we did. Supes and I are old friends, and this is one of the best Superman movies in a long time… maybe ever.”
Martin went on to describe how this new Superman reminded him of the character he loved as a kid, “the strange visitor from another planet who came to Earth with powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men. (And yes, an innocent, of course, he’s always been an immigrant. And an illegal immigrant, when you stop to think if it).”
He also praised James Gunn’s work on the film, especially the casting. “The film looks great, and James Gunn did a great job with the casting. Rachel Bosnahan was terrific as Lois Lane; I’d say it’s between her and Margot Kidder for Best Lois Ever. And there’s no doubt whatsoever for the Best Lex. Nicholas Hoult was far and away the Best Luthor of All Time, a truly chilling villain. The kid in the cape was excellent as well. I hope he gets to play Kal-El in another dozen movies.”
Superman premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre on July 7, 2025, and opened across the U.S. on July 11. It’s the first movie in the DC Universe’s new Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
So far, the film has earned $472 million worldwide, making it the eighth-highest-grossing movie of the year. Critics generally liked it too, calling it fun, colorful, and heartfelt. Some thought it packed in a bit too much, but the performances by David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult got a lot of praise.
David Corenswet, who plays Superman, mentioned that he’s signed on for several upcoming DC projects. James Gunn also hinted that the sequel might not just be a solo Superman film, but possibly a team-up movie. Fans are definitely excited to see what’s next for this new take on the Man of Steel.
