The first season, which came out on August 31, 2023, was a huge success for Netflix. It was praised by critics and fans for its cast, writing, special effects, and how true it stayed to the original manga and anime. Several outlets even called it one of the best live-action anime adaptations ever made.
One Piece became Netflix’s most-watched series for the second half of 2023. Just two weeks after its debut, Netflix announced that the show would return for season two. Filming kicked off in June 2024, and the new season is set to premiere in 2026.
Hints about new characters started coming as early as September 2023, when creator Eiichiro Oda teased the appearance of Tony Tony Chopper in a video announcing the renewal.
In May 2024, a post on the show’s social media had Iñaki Godoy, who plays Luffy, celebrating his character’s birthday and teasing the arrival of Mr. 3. Around the same time, casting calls went out for several major characters, including Miss Wednesday, Miss All Sunday, Smoker, Tashigi, and Miss Goldenweek.
Over the following months, the cast for season two grew. In June 2024, Daniel Lasker, Camrus Johnson, Jazzara Jaslyn, and David Dastmalchian were announced as Mr. 9, Mr. 5, Miss Valentine, and Mr. 3. The next day, Clive Russell, Brendan Murray, and Werner Coetser joined as Crocus, Brogy, and Dorry. Soon after, Callum Kerr, Julia Rehwald, Rob Colletti, and Ty Keogh were revealed as Smoker, Tashigi, Wapol, and Dalton.
One of the most talked-about casting updates came in July 2024. In the past, Jamie Lee Curtis had said she was interested in playing Dr. Kureha. Becky Clements, president of Tomorrow Studios, confirmed that Curtis was approached but couldn’t take the role because of scheduling issues. Katey Sagal was later announced as Dr. Kureha, with Mark Harelik as Dr. Hiruluk. Other additions include Sendhil Ramamurthy as Nefertari Cobra, Charithra Chandran as Miss Wednesday, Joe Manganiello as Mr. 0, and Lera Abova as Miss All Sunday. In 2025, Sophia Anne Caruso, Mark Penwill, and Anton David Jeftha were added as Miss Goldenweek, Chess, and K.M., along with Rigo Sanchez, Yonda Thomas, and James Hiroyuki Liao as Dragon, Igaram, and Ipponmatsu. At Netflix’s Tudum event in May 2025, it was announced that Mikaela Hoover would voice Chopper.
Production faced delays due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Marty Adelstein, CEO of Tomorrow Studios, said the scripts were ready but filming had to wait until the strike ended. Clements explained that once filming began, they expected a release about 12–18 months later. She also shared that they’ve had “thorough conversations” about the second season with Netflix, Shueisha, and Oda, and lighter talks about plans for up to six seasons. Adelstein noted that with over 1,000 chapters in the manga, even six seasons would only cover half the story.
Now, with the first look revealed, fans have a clear sign that the Straw Hats’ next chapter is closer than ever.
