[Trailer] Orlando Bloom Drops 52 Pounds in Intense Transformation for Boxing Drama ‘The Cut’
Orlando Bloom has shocked fans by revealing he dropped an incredible 52 pounds in just three months for his new boxing drama The Cut. Speaking to Variety at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, Bloom explained how he transformed his body for the role.
In the film, directed by Sean Ellis, Bloom plays a retired boxer making a comeback to fight for a championship title. His character undergoes an extreme weight-cutting program under the guidance of a tough, unorthodox coach, played by John Turturro.
“I basically tiered down the food over a three-month period until just before filming, when I was at my lightest,” Bloom said. “I dropped 52 pounds, and I was about 185 when I started. So I dropped quite a lot of weight, and I was very mentally challenged as well. You feed somebody tuna and cucumber long enough…”

Ellis revealed that the movie was filmed in reverse order to help Bloom handle the transformation. “Your brain is starved of calories, basically. It was going to be impossible for him to work while dieting. So, he came to us at his lightest, and then he starts to eat. That meant we had to shoot the ending first and the beginning last. Over the 25 days of shooting, he was putting on the calories, and then it’s edited in reverse.”
Bloom said the toughest part wasn’t just the lack of calories, but the mental strain. “I was more surprised about the mental aspect of it, like the sleep deprivation, and not the depleted calories. There’s a lot going on in your brain… living in that headspace for a while was very challenging.”
The movie focuses heavily on the physical and mental toll of his character’s weight-loss journey, including one shocking scene where the boxer drains blood before an important weigh-in. Bloom even said someone fainted during the premiere screening. “Somebody in my row passed out!” he recalled.
The Cut premiered as a Special Presentation at the Toronto International Film Festival and offers a raw look at the dangerous extremes of competitive boxing. It’s less about the fight in the ring and more about what it takes to get there, both physically and mentally.
