James Gunn is staying in Superman’s world. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav just confirmed that Gunn will not only write but also direct the next movie in what he called the “Super-Family.”

This announcement came during the company’s latest earnings call and adds more fuel to the fire for fans wondering what’s next after Superman.

Gunn had already mentioned in earlier interviews during the Superman press tour that he was writing another movie with David Corenswet’s Superman involved. But he never clearly said whether it was a direct sequel or something else in the same universe. Now, with Zaslav’s comments, we know it’s the next “Super-Family” movie, though we still don’t know exactly what that means.

While Zaslav didn’t offer any more details, what’s clear is that Gunn is returning to both write and direct, just like he did with Superman, which has turned out to be a big hit. As of August 5, 2025, Superman has made over $559 million worldwide. That includes $320.3 million from the U.S. and Canada and $239 million from international audiences.

The movie has also been doing well with both critics and audiences. On Rotten Tomatoes, 83% of the 471 reviews are positive. The critics’ summary on the site says: “Pulling off the heroic feat of fleshing out a dynamic new world while putting its champion’s big, beating heart front and center, this Superman flies high as a Man of Tomorrow grounded in the here and now.” Over on Metacritic, the film holds a score of 68 out of 100, based on 58 critic reviews, which means it got “generally favorable” reactions.

Viewers liked how fun and colorful the film was, and the performances, especially from Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult, were praised. Some critics said the movie had a few too many characters and ideas packed in, but overall, it worked.

Fans also seemed to enjoy it. According to CinemaScore, audiences gave it an A−, the same grade that Man of Steel received. PostTrak reported that 86% of viewers had a positive experience, and 74% said they would definitely recommend the film.

Recently, a fan on social media asked Gunn what he was working on now that Superman promotion was finished. Gunn replied, “Peacemaker press!! And sequel writing!!!” Then another fan followed up with, “WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO TEASE THE SEQUEL,” and Gunn quickly responded, “I JUST DID!”

This is interesting because, before Superman was released, Gunn downplayed the idea of doing a regular sequel. When someone asked him about Superman 2 on Threads, he replied, “Define Superman 2.” That made people think he wasn’t planning a traditional follow-up, or maybe he just didn’t want to reveal too much too soon.

The movie focusing on Supergirl, Superman’s cousin, is scheduled to be released by Warner Bros. Pictures in the United States on June 26, 2026, directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira.
