Stephen King is one of the most famous writers in the world, known for creating some of the scariest books ever written. But he isn’t just about novels. He also watches movies and TV shows and isn’t shy about sharing what he thinks.

Recently, during a Reddit AMA, King revealed the last movie and TV show that genuinely scared him, giving fans a peek into what still gives him chills.

When it comes to TV, King said the scariest show he’s seen recently is The Fall of the House of Usher. This isn’t a big surprise. King has been praising the show on his private X account, showing that it really impressed him.

he series first appeared on Netflix in 2023 and quickly became a hit with critics, holding a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

King shared his thoughts about it on X, writing, “THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER (Netflix): I missed this when it bowed due to hip surgery, but this is a case of delayed gratification. Scary, involving, with writing that’s witty and moves the plot. There’s a case to be made for Mike Flanagan being the Quentin Tarantino of horror.” It’s clear that King really enjoyed the mix of suspense, smart writing, and strong storytelling in the show.

For movies, the one that recently scared him the most is Weapons, a 2025 mystery horror film. The movie is written, directed, produced, and even co-scored by Zach Cregger. It stars big names like Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Toby Huss, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan.

The story is mysterious and creepy: seventeen children from the same classroom vanish on the same night, apparently taken by an unseen force. The film keeps viewers on edge with its suspenseful plot and haunting atmosphere.

Weapons has received high praise from critics and fans alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, 94% of 338 reviews were positive.

The site’s consensus reads, “Zach Cregger spins an expertly crafted yarn of terrifying mystery and thrilling intrigue in Weapons, a sophomore triumph that solidifies his status as a master of horror.” Pretty much everyone in the world of horror has given it glowing reviews, and King’s endorsement just adds to the buzz.

Even after decades of writing and reading some of the darkest stories ever, Stephen King still finds movies and shows that truly scare him. For fans, this is a sign that these picks are worth checking out. If King says something is terrifying, it’s a safe bet that viewers will be in for a thrill.
