The new season continues the story of Middle-earth during the Second Age, focusing on the growing war between the Elves and Sauron.
The timeline jumps ahead a few years from season two, placing the story at a point where Sauron is working toward creating the One Ring. His goal is to gain enough power to turn the tide of the war and expand his control over Middle-earth.
Amazon MGM Studios is producing the season with New Line Cinema. J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay return as showrunners. The directing team includes Charlotte Brändström, Sanaa Hamri, and Stefan Schwartz, each handling multiple episodes. The writing group features Payne and McKay along with Justin Doble, Ben Tagoe, Ava Wong Davies, Constance Cheng, Jonathan Wilson, Griff Jones, and Sarah Anson.
Season three has been in the works for several years. Amazon acquired the television rights back in 2017 and planned multiple seasons from the start. Writing for the third season was already underway by late 2024, and Amazon officially confirmed earlier this year. Filming began in the United Kingdom around May and finished in October.
Many cast members from the previous seasons are returning. Cynthia Addai-Robinson is back as Míriel, Robert Aramayo returns as Elrond, and Morfydd Clark once again plays Galadriel. Others returning include Ismael Cruz Córdova, Trystan Gravelle, Lloyd Owen, Charlie Vickers, Benjamin Walker, and Daniel Weyman.
Season three also brings new faces. Jamie Campbell Bower has joined as a major new character known as Arlen. His role has been described as a “handsome high-born knight”, and early reports suggest he may become a new love interest for Galadriel. Eddie Marsan is also joining the cast in a recurring role under the code name Dromm.
His character uses a Scottish accent, which sparked talk that he may be connected to the Dwarves. More cast additions were confirmed once filming started, including Andrew Richardson, Zubin Varla, and Adam Young. Varla previously did voice work on season two, though it is unclear if that connects to his new role.
