Kevin Costner Reveals Why He Has a Strong Dislike for Western Movies

Kevin Costner began his rise to stardom during the 1980s, landing early roles in projects like The Big Chill and Fandango. His first massive commercial breakthrough arrived with the 1987 crime drama The Untouchables, where he played the iconic Prohibition-era agent Elliot Ness.

That performance established him as a leading man capable of carrying major studio blockbusters. Despite his reputation as a definitive Western star, the actor has often been vocal about his critical perspective on the genre.

He became synonymous with stories of the American frontier through his work in Silverado, his Oscar-winning masterpiece Dances with Wolves, and later features like A Perfect World and Wyatt Earp.

However, he maintains that many films in this category fall short of his personal expectations for storytelling. During a 2019 interview on Good Morning America, he explained that he holds Westerns to a high standard regarding writing and intellectual depth.

“Westerns have to be literate,” he said. “It’s too much black hat, white hat… I won’t tolerate bad language, meaning literacy of a western on TV or in film. I hate it. I don’t like it when it’s dumb because there’s such a great opportunity, because the architecture of a western should be to actually frighten you, sitting in the dark, watching something.

‘That could have just happened to me. And I don’t know what I would’ve done.’” He believes that the genre is most effective when it leans into the unpredictable and perilous nature of life on the frontier.

“America was a wide-open place, and violence was random,” he continued. “And when you really invest in the writing to actually make that a character, the randomness, and it can be really scary to be out there by yourself, to be a decent man and come across psychopaths.”

Costner remains one of the most significant figures in modern entertainment, having recently concluded his legendary run as John Dutton on the hit series Yellowstone. His departure from that project has allowed him to focus entirely on his own sweeping epic, the Horizon saga.

The first two chapters of this ambitious series were released throughout 2025, and he is currently in the final stages of production for the third installment, which is scheduled to premiere in theaters in late 2026.

Beyond his directorial work, the actor has been busy developing a variety of new projects through his production company, Territory Pictures. He is reportedly working on a modern-day survival thriller that will begin filming in early 2027, showcasing his continued interest in stories that focus on isolation and human resilience.

This project is expected to feature a stripped-back ensemble cast, focusing heavily on character-driven suspense rather than action-heavy tropes. Costner’s legacy as both an actor and a filmmaker is cemented by his ability to revitalize traditional American genres for contemporary audiences.

While he is often associated with the classic imagery of the Old West, his commitment to sophisticated writing ensures that his contributions remain distinct and thoughtful. As he continues to expand his Horizon project, he shows no signs of slowing down his pace as a storyteller.
