HBO is preparing to pull back the curtain on its highly anticipated television adaptation with a new standalone documentary. Titled Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic, the special aims to provide an exhaustive look at the creative journey involved in reimagining the first season of the beloved franchise.

Scheduled to debut on April 5, the program arrives several months before the series itself is expected to premiere during the Christmas season. The documentary features behind-the-scenes footage and deep dives into the casting search that eventually landed Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton in the iconic lead roles.

Narrated by Nick Frost, who portrays Hagrid in the new version, the special highlights the technical precision required to rebuild the wizarding world. A teaser released on Thursday showcased various artisans discussing the expanded scale of the project, with one designer noting, “We’re adding a level of world-building beyond what the audience is familiar with.”

Key cast members also participate in the special, including John Lithgow and Paapa Essiedu, who take on the roles of Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape, respectively. Lithgow appears in the promotional material reflecting on the gravity of revisiting such a famous narrative.

He describes the opportunity as a chance to explore parts of the story that previously remained off-screen, stating, “To play in a sandbox this big, it really is incredible. To reimagine the Harry Potter canon, to let it breathe – we get to enact all the things that you know are going on in the wings, but you don’t see them.”

The veteran actor also expressed the emotional weight of joining a project that carries so much meaning for global audiences. He reflected on the long wait for a role of this magnitude, adding, “You wait forever to do something that means that much to people.”

While the production has faced some public discourse regarding the original author’s social stances, the excitement for the show remains high, with the first trailer breaking viewership records for the network last week.

The first season, which focuses on The Philosopher’s Stone, is being written by Francesca Gardiner, known for her acclaimed work on Succession. HBO has already confirmed plans to adapt each of the seven novels into individual seasons, ensuring the franchise will remain a fixture of the television landscape for the next decade.
