A recent interview with Mark Hamill, best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars series, brings back a question fans have been asking for decades. The discussion, reported from a phone conversation covered by Polygon, focuses on something many viewers have wondered for years: Luke’s sexuality.

Hamill shared that ever since the first movie came out in 1977, people have often asked him why Luke never got married. That question usually turns into another one about whether Luke is gay. Instead of avoiding the topic, Hamill gave a very direct and open answer.

He explained that George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, never clearly defined Luke’s sexuality in the films. Because of that, Hamill believes the answer depends on the viewer. As he put it, “So if you want him to be gay, he is. If you don’t want him to be, he’s not. It’s whatever you want.”

This idea isn’t new for him. Back in 2016, when he returned for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, he spoke about the same topic during a time when people were talking more about LGBTQ+ representation in big movies. Even now, years later, his opinion has not changed.

The article also points out that the official Star Wars story has shifted over time. In the 1990s books, Luke had a wife named Mara Jade, introduced in Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn. But after The Walt Disney Company bought Lucasfilm, those older stories were removed from official canon. Recently, writers like Claudia Gray and Zahn confirmed at a fan event that there are no current plans to bring Mara Jade back into the main storyline.

Even with all these changes, Hamill doesn’t think one fixed answer is necessary. He believes people connect to Star Wars in personal ways, often linking the movies to moments in their own lives. He explained that fans bring their own meaning to the story, which is part of why it has lasted so long.

He said, “When they talk about the movies, they relate it to how they saw it… They personalize it, in a way.” For him, that connection across generations is what makes Star Wars special.

The interview also shares a lighter story from the filming of Return of the Jedi. When Hamill and Carrie Fisher found out their characters were siblings, he joked about whether that made Luke royalty. Fisher quickly shut that idea down. Hamill remembered the moment with humor, saying, “Well, wait a minute, if I’m Leia’s brother and she’s a princess, does that make me royalty?” and that Fisher immediately replied no.

In the end, Hamill’s view is simple. Luke Skywalker can be whatever the audience wants him to be. That openness is part of what keeps the character meaningful to so many people, even after all these years.
