Barbie Ferreira is shedding light on her departure from the cult-hit series Euphoria, clarifying the circumstances surrounding the end of Kat Hernandez’s storyline. During a conversation on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, aired on April 14, the 29-year-old actress dismissed the long-standing rumors of a messy exit.

She described the split as a gradual, mutual realization that her character had reached a creative plateau. The performer noted that the decision followed a sequence of discussions where it became clear that the production team could not find a meaningful path forward for her role.

“In fact, it was kind of the opposite of dramatic, where it was a long process of being like, ‘I don’t know if this is it for me,’” Ferreira explained. She emphasized that she felt the character was losing the distinct identity she had established during the first season, leading her to feel more like a background presence than a central figure.

Ferreira voiced her preference for smaller, creatively demanding projects over a stagnant role on a major network production. “The thing is, I don’t need to be on the biggest TV show on earth if I’m not, like, acting, you know?” she remarked, adding that she would choose an indie film over being a “background character” for months on end.

This commitment to her craft ultimately led her to step away after the second season to focus on telling what she describes as “cool and real stories.” Reflecting on her journey, Ferreira expressed a sense of pride in her work while acknowledging that her professional goals had shifted.

“At the end of the day, [I] was like, ‘I believe in myself as an actress. And I want to see my career look a little differently than this,’” she stated. She noted that while she loved her four-year experience embodying the character, it was best for both her and the show’s creator, Sam Levinson, to conclude that chapter.

As Euphoria returned for its third season on April 12, featuring the original core cast, including Zendaya and Jacob Elordi, Ferreira has transitioned into the world of film. She currently stars in the horror reimagining Faces of Death, which hit theaters earlier this month.

The movie, which blends viral video culture with slasher elements, features her alongside Dacre Montgomery and pop star Charli xcx. Looking forward, the actress is also headlining the indie romantic comedy Mile End Kicks, set to debut in select theaters on April 17.

The film follows a music journalist navigating the Montreal indie scene and stars Jay Baruchel and Devon Bostick. All of these projects are demonstrating the versatile career path she envisioned after moving on from her television roots.
