The First Official Plot Synopsis for Ryan Gosling’s ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ Is Here and It Hints at Something Epic
The return of ‘Star Wars‘ to theaters has been one of the most closely watched stories in Hollywood, and no upcoming project carries more anticipation than ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’. The film is directed by Shawn Levy and written by Jonathan Tropper, produced by Lucasfilm alongside Levy’s own 21 Laps Entertainment, and is set to be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It made a spectacular entrance at Star Wars Celebration Japan in April 2025, and the buzz has barely let up since.
The story is set five years after the events of ‘The Rise of Skywalker’, making it the furthest-forward live-action chapter in the franchise timeline. Ryan Gosling portrays an ace fighter pilot, with Irish newcomer Flynn Gray playing his younger companion in what appears to be a classic pairing of protector and protégé, as the duo finds itself pursued through the galaxy by a formidable band of villains. With filming wrapped in December 2025, the production is now firmly in post-production, with editors, composers, and visual effects teams shaping the final cut.
A newly surfaced official plot synopsis listed on IMDb has now offered audiences their first real look at the story. The synopsis describes a solitary pilot in a galaxy still rebuilding, who becomes entangled in a mission of critical importance as dangerous new threats emerge, with a journey that may ultimately determine the fate of the Force itself. It is deliberately lean, but the stakes embedded in those few lines are anything but small, pointing to a narrative with genuine mythic weight rather than a contained action adventure.
The film boasts one of the most striking ensembles the franchise has assembled in years, with Mia Goth and Matt Smith confirmed as the primary antagonists hunting down Gosling and Gray, while Amy Adams plays the mother of Gray’s character. None of the familiar figures from the Skywalker Saga will appear, keeping the focus entirely on a cast of original characters.
That sense of creative freedom has defined Levy’s vision from the beginning. Speaking at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, the filmmaker told The Hollywood Reporter that the film is a fully standalone adventure set in a period of the timeline the franchise has never explored before, with no connections to the prequel or sequel trilogies.
Gosling was equally impassioned at the Celebration announcement via ABC News, telling the crowd that the script is exceptional, brimming with heart and original characters, and that Levy is simply the right person for this particular story. Thomas Newman has been brought on as composer, with Levy aiming for a score that feels big-hearted and classically inspired without directly replicating the legendary John Williams blueprint.
‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ is set to arrive in theaters on May 28, 2027. With a cast loaded with talent, a director who balances spectacle and emotional depth, and a synopsis that gestures toward the fate of the Force itself, the galaxy far, far away is clearly swinging for something monumental.
Does the idea of a lone pilot dragging the Force’s future into uncertain new territory have you excited for what Gosling and Levy are building together?
